Trade Campaign To Start In Roanoke Rapids Nov 3
The Roanoke Rapids Merchants Association approved a Fall Trades Campaign to run seven weeks starting Friday November 3 with Saturday prize drawings. Members favored repeating a similar format to recent years and discussed heavy advertising and signs at entrances and schools to train local salespeople. Auto license tag sales were also supported by the group led by local dealers Bill Edwards and Bill White.

Safety Council Committee to Meet in Roanoke Rapids
The Safety Council Committee once formed in Roanoke Rapids will convene Friday October 20 at 1 00 pm in the Municipal Building to discuss forming a city council. The panel includes Frank Sherry chairman Mayor Bernard Allsbrook Carroll Wilson Mrs Gordon Berkstresser and C W Davis. Sherry expects a definite plan to be presented to local organizations soon.

Court Term Canceled By Governor Hoey
The October 23 term of Superior Court, criminal docket, is canceled at the request of the County Commissioners who cite insufficient cases. The next criminal docket will begin the week of November 27, and cases from the October term are continued to that date.

The Roanoke Rapids Community Chest officers met at Virginia Electric & Power Co. on Monday afternoon October 16. The Budget Committee submitted the 1940 budget and recommended additional funds for 1939 work: Woman's Club Milk Fund $100, School Lunch & Book Fund $100, and Associated Charities $1,250. Boykins Man Injured in Saturday Car Crash
Earl English from Boykins Virginia is hospitalized in Roanoke Rapids with head injuries from a last Saturday night crash while driving between Boykins and Edwards. Two Edwards brothers are involved and another passenger identified only as a youth from Boykins, while the others in the car were uninjured.

Negro Man Escapes After Razor Attack in Peanut Field
Frances B. Leonard of Mechanicville New York was wounded in a struggle with a captured black suspect in a Woodland North Carolina peanut field near Woodland Fair. Leonard, connected with Miller Bros Shows, received multiple slash wounds requiring about 50 stitches. The assailant, who fled, was still at large late today.
