North Carolina Christian Missionary Convention to Meet in Rocky Mount

The 89th NC Christian Missionary Convention will convene in Rocky Mount from November 8 to 10. Rev W H Grantham of Nokesdale Roanoke Rapids Church appears on the program the evening of the ninth. Dr and Mrs O Griffin welcomed a son William Crane born Halloween night weighing 8 pounds. mother and baby both doing well. County Commissioner Frank Joyner visited Raleigh on county and city business and urged Highway Commissioner Jeffries to repave the Avenue as promised. A reader note requests details on a so called Mad Stone. Woman's Club scheduled November meeting Monday at 3 pm at the Club House with a full program. Richard Webb, son of Mr and Mrs B S Webb, was struck by a Virginia car near First Methodist Church but suffered no injuries.

Crutchfield Assault Case Postponed to Nov 10

The case against John Crutchfield for assault on Clarence O Byrd was continued to Friday November 10 by Magistrate W O Thompson with all parties agreeing. Crutchfield faced charges of assault with a deadly weapon and witness intimidation. he pleaded not guilty to those counts and pleaded guilty to simple assault before the continuance was requested.

Officers to Bring Matthews Back From San Francisco

Two Halifax County officers will travel to San Francisco next week to return E. A. Matthews Roanoke Rapids lawyer indicted for embezzlement in the county. The Board of County Commissioners will meet Monday and approve advancing the travel funds to be repaid by the State when Matthews is jailed here. Delays over who pays have drawn criticism of state officials for seeming reluctance to pursue the case.

Girl Hit by Auto Recovers. No Serious Injury

Madeline Deaton six and a half years old was struck by a car driven by Mrs Frank Kemp Monday. She rests at a local hospital with minor cuts bruises and a slight concussion. Witnesses Clyde Brigman and Walter Sawyer call the accident unavoidable as the child darted from behind a wagon.

Voting To Start At Sun Up For Prohibition Repeal Ballots

Roanoke Rapids precincts set sun up to close at sundown for the November 7 election on repealing the 18th amendment. Ballots show repeal options on Convention and delegates with two repeal delegates for Forsyth County. Registrars J. F. Welch and John Clark oversee polling at the Va Carolina Furniture Co. and Patterson Store Building. All eligible voters based on county registration or the last election may vote on national prohibition repeal. North Carolina joins six states voting that day. 88 have already voted yes.

Weldon Home of G H Nash Burns Sunday Evening

The bungalow home of G H Nash an Weldon automobile dealer on Elm Street caught fire last Sunday at 9 45 P M. The blaze damaged the roof and the furnishings were damaged by water fire and breakage while the Nash family was at home two children ill in bed.
