Halifax held its final commencement on Friday April 30 with four Group Centers competing for the Loving Cup donated by S. F. Patterson of Roanoke Rapids. Halifax won the debate and Bear Swamp and South Rosemary led in song contests, while Hobgood School took the original group center composition prize. Individual winners included Elizabeth Stedman and Maxine Westphall in debate and Evelyn Brown Butts for storytelling.

Erie Canal Opens In 1817 After Cannon Announcements
The Erie Canal joining Lake Erie to the Hudson River opened on October 25. Cannon fired at intervals along its length to mark the event. Construction began at Rome in 1817 and was completed chiefly due to DeWitt Clinton's influence.
