A Roanoke Rapids editorial urges support for local Boy Scouts as 100 boys seek supervision and training. The Kiwanis Minstrel Fund has nearly exhausted its reserve after funding monthly Scout expenses, and organizers seek ideas to raise about 200 for four months, considering a late Minstrel or a town carnival.
Margaret McLeod former Roanoke Rapids resident aged 22 died from poisoning in Raleigh after two weeks of suffering. She was wife of W P McLeod and mother of Jackie four, with the family living in Hornertown after moving from Patterson Mill village. Her husband also worked for Patterson Mills Co. and the case is reported to involve a suicide attempt followed by death at Mary Elizabeth hospital.
The Roanoke Rapids Herald will publish next week the diary of William Ed ward Bradley a Confederate soldier and prisoner. Bradley enlisted at 18 in the 12th Virginia Regiment fought in the Pennsylvania campaigns and was captured by Union forces in April 1865. The diary covers his experiences from capture to war’s end. His daughter Mrs Elsie Bradley Clark of Thelma loaned the diary to the paper.
Roanoke Rapids plans a four team City League this year with squads from Patterson Mills Roanoke Mills Rosemary Mfg Co and Virginia Electric Power Co. Fletcher Dickens chairs Vepco team while Bill Alligood adds a junior legion side. Double headers Saturdays at Simmons Park with a trophy for the winner and a report each week in The Herald.
City plans a regular election on May 2 to decide the mayor for a two year term and two city commissioners for three years each. Mayor Jenkins, already judge of the Mayor's Court and chief of police, is poised for nomination. Voters may register from April 14. North Ward registration at A L Clark’s office with E A Tellega, South Ward at Joyner Motor Co. with E E Lehman.
This afternoon the Appropriations Bill was increased to 82 million dollars. The beer bill faces its second reading in the Senate tonight as lawmakers debate funding and policy implications.
The Nemars, famed world entertainers, visit Roanoke Rapids Friday and Saturday April 21 and 22 at a local theatre. They will present a free blindfolded car ride through town directed by telepathy from a car a half block away with prizes for spectators. Publicity notes their credentials are verified and merchants back the event.
