Pope Ill in Enfield Delays Final Reading of S B 242

Representative R Hunter Pope is ill with the flu at his Enfield home causing Speaker Reginald Harris to pause the third and final reading of S B 242 until early next week. Pope has led the fight for a referendum amendment to aid Roanoke Rapids, aided by supporters in Raleigh despite Republican foes and lobbying. The illness strengthens reliance on volunteers as Pope recovers and the battle resumes with renewed urgency for a vote.

Pay checks cashing calm amid weekend bank shuffles

Few signs of panic as banks halted cashing pay checks Saturday after Friday activity. Business continued with small barter and smaller denomination checks, while residents kept daily routines. Rosemary Concert Band planned a Sunday lawn concert at Roanoke Rapids Hospital at 3 pm weather permitting. Auctioneer L M Swett led a furniture sale by L A Daniels next to Joyner Motor Co starting Saturday. Swett noted Roanoke Rapids as a bright southern spot amid the activity.

Telegraph officials deny the free words offer is a Scotch gimmick and say the four extra words must be Reply by Western Union. They argue the gift speeds telegram responses, benefiting both public and company.

Crutchfield elected to Phi Kappa Phi honor at State College

Word arrives that E. B. Crutchfield of this city, a third year student at State College in Raleigh, has been elected to Phi Kappa Phi. The national honorary society is the highest scholastic honor, chosen from State College along with twelve other upperclassmen.

Two Banks in Halifax County Open for Business

Two Halifax county banks opened for business this morning on an unrestricted basis handling deposits and checks as usual. The Citizens Bank & Trust Co. of this city and the Bank of Enfield reported deposits far exceeding withdrawals and said affairs were above par when they closed, per their cashiers. Other county banks expected to follow suit soon.

Funeral Monday for Geo L Carpenter of Northampton

Funeral services were held Monday afternoon from the W C Williams Funeral Home for George L Carpenter 87 year old resident of Northampton County who died Sunday in Roanoke Rapids Hospital Rev W H Grantham of the Christian Church officiated and burial was in Northampton County Cemetery at four o clock Monday afternoon

L A Daniels owner of the Daniels Furniture and Sales Co announces in this week’s Herald a complete liquidation by auction. The former New York Furniture Co stock moves to the Joyner Motor Co area for daily sales at 3 PM and 8 PM starting Saturday. Free prizes accompany each day with a high grade stock going to the highest bidder.

Arbor Day Observed Early With Chapel Program City Schools

North Carolina schools and organizations mark Arbor Day on March 17 with tree plantings and programs on forest preservation. City Superintendent C. W. Davis notes the state’s forests cover two thirds of land and urges a day devoted to trees and forest cultivation.
