Two building permits totaling 610 000 were issued last week raising the city total to 654 575 by March 1 1948. Rosemary Manufacturing Company received permits for reroofing Mills 1 and 3 and for a finishing department extension 150 by 300 feet. No new home permits were recorded and totals show 622 875 for 1948 through March 1.

He lived in Enfield long engaged in farming and recently moved to Virginia. Cone Mill Seeks Election on Union Decertification
Workers at Proximity Manufacturing filed a decertification petition under the Taft-Hartley Act with the National Labor Relations Board in Winston-Salem seeking a vote on whether the Textile Workers Union of America CIO remains their bargaining agent. About 400 workers signed the election request, surpassing the 30 percent threshold. previous union gains at Proximity dated to March 1945 with the Conella Corporation.

All Night Chase Ends With Suspect Charged In Auto Theft
Enock Book, about 28, jailed in Halifax County awaiting preliminary hearing on auto theft charges after a Friday night attempt to steal a tractor and trailer valued around 2000 from Turner Lumber Company. Officers tracked him across Roanoke Rapids to Weldon before cornering him near the paper mill. he admitted taking the equipment. He faces trial at Halifax County Superior Court.

City Board Votes Cash Payment For Fire Truck
The Roanoke Rapids city board approved a 2 percent price reduction on the fire engine if paid within 300 days, paying 12 875. They also hired Alex Bullock as sanitary inspector and planned a second story addition to the Fire Department building to relieve crowding. A new parking meter ordinance will take effect when meters are installed, with a motorcycle police presence and limited hours. The Kiwanis parade will showcase the new fire truck and police car.

Firemen Answer Four Calls Here
Firemen answered four calls during the week including two grass fires in Chaloner Park. On Friday at 10 05 A M they doused one grass fire. Monday at 4 15 P M they returned to the area to extinguish another. Saturday morning they responded to 1304 Washington Street for an oil stove flare up. Later Saturday at 3 20 P M they put out a grass fire near 524 Jefferson Street.

She native to Sussex County spent most life there survived by five daughters and five sons and five grandchildren. Funeral Monday at 3 PM at Mrs Riddle's Carson residence with interment in Antioch Baptist Church Cemetery Sussex County.

Accident Victims Improve After Train Collision
Enfield, February 28 A. C. L. railroad tracks near Burnette Streets saw a train strike a car carrying Eugene Gray Lucius Stallings and Sammy Beavans. The engine rear damaged the car injuring Stallings who received stitches. Two others were in hospital with head injuries and are improving.
