City Board to File WPA Request for Tenth Street Drainage
Roanoke Rapids city officials prepared to file a WPA aid application for a storm drainage project on Tenth Street between Franklin and Rapids. Engineer Christie estimated total cost at 8830 dollars with 5400 for material and manholes and 430 for other expenses. If approved WPA would fund 7064 dollars, with the city contributing 1766 dollars. A Herald survey shows Roanoke Rapids merchants split over closing on Monday July 4 with many dry goods clothing and department stores likely to shut all day while groceries may stay open. The Merchants Association notes only three closing days per year Thanksgiving Christmas and the Fourth and many shops may follow the others or keep regular hours creating a practical holiday pattern.

Five School Teachers Injured in Car Wreck
Five teachers traveling from Greensboro to Newport News for a weekend visit were injured in a 3:30 am crash at South Rosemary Corner. The small sedan hit a telephone pole causing about 200 dollars in damage. All escaped with minor injuries except Margaret Myers who broke an arm and received hospital treatment before rejoining the group.
