Crops Battered On 14 Northampton Farms By Wind and Hail
A freak hail and windstorm struck the Gumberry area of Northampton County lifting and shredding corn cotton and tobacco on 14 farms mid afternoon Sunday. Homes and barns suffered severe damage including three tenant houses. Local residents report winds from the north and west causing extensive crop loss with corn nearly stripped, tobacco 40 to 60 percent damaged and cotton up to 80 percent in places.

Roanoke Pharmacy Break In Solved as Suspect Arrested
Police report a 24 year old Roanoke resident, L. E. Draper, was arrested at his Madison and Jackson Streets home at 7 30 Monday morning in connection with the pharmacy break in and a separate clinic burglary. Officers say Draper admitted entering the clinic and drug store on June MW, with goods valued at 1500 to 2000 recovered. Draper is jailed in Halifax county awaiting trial in Superior Court opening August 16.

County Commissioners Reverse Stand On Tax Rate
Halifax County commissioners reversed themselves on the tax rate and adopted a tentative general budget of 721168.65 based on 69 cents. The board, present in full, voted to publish a budget estimate of 721168.78 including 28910.78 for debt service, based on 65 cents, after dispute over school funding.

Two Halifax County ABC Board members examined Edgecombe County’s ABC law enforcement system last Friday as they consider forming a similar unit. Chairman J F Vincent and H W Rothrock observed Edgecombe’s five officers with $1200 monthly salaries and radio equipped cars. Halifax now pays $600 monthly to the sheriff’s department for ABC enforcement. The Halifax Board has not decided on action yet.

A fire bug tried to set Moody's grocery at 210 East Second Street Sunday night. Neighbors spotted the saturated cotton with kerosene behind a Coca Cola sign, and a match. They extinguished it with mud, preventing a blaze.
