Hendersonville, N C plans a gala street dance to open the 1948 dance season on Monday July 5 with several thousand attendees. Square and round dancing will be featured along with performances by Bascom Lamar Lunsford and visiting mountain dancers. A beaut y brigade will scrub streets prior to festivities and street dances will recur each Monday night.
Nina Page Braswell daughter of Mr and Mrs W Lewis Braswell assumed duties as home demonstration agent in Perquimans County on Wednesday June 16. She taught home economics at Rich Square High School and graduated from the Woman’s College of the University of North Carolina Greensboro in 1947. For weeks she worked with Mrs John Price the Northampton County home demonstration agent. Her mother is active in home demonstration work.
Roanoke Rapids will see house to house DDT spraying this week under Ben Lancaster of the Mosquito Control Program. The U S Public Health Service funds and conducts spraying, with local crews from Roanoke Mills and Patterson Mills handling villages and the city spraying remaining houses. Homeowners are asked to prepare by clearing space, moving items from walls, and having water ready, so the crew can spray interiors and protect residents from malaria, Fire roaches and fleas.
Warren County undertakes a major remodel adding four escape proof jail rooms with separate women’s quarters, private showers, hot and cold water, steam heat, and an isolation for the sick. Four more court house rooms are being added under the same contract, with completion expected in July. Architect John Rowlard of Kingston draws plans. Loftis and Co. are the contractors. Estimated total cost is $100,000.
Roanoke Rapids drivers with surnames starting C or D must complete the new Highway Safety Act driving test by June 30 to avoid penalties. Tests cover highway signs rules vision and driving with renewals also due. New licenses available at Municipal Building daily except Mondays from 4 AM to 4 PM.
Warrenton man Jack Smiley Jr of Cherry Point and Warrenton was found in New River Monday after a three day search. He disappeared Saturday while fishing. his boat drifted ashore and a river dredge search began. The body was recovered around noon Monday. He held a Civil Service job at Cherry Point Marine Base and is survived by his wife, a five month old son, his Warrenton parents, a sister Helen of Warrenton, and a brother Berlyn of Plymouth. Funeral services were held at Cherry Point church Tuesday morning.
The Tough Second Marine Division maintains extensive gardens at Camp Lejeune North Carolina. A 20 acre nursery houses numerous trees shrubs and flowers including azaleas camellias rhododendrons and Easter lilies. The base sends thousands of plants to Cherry Point Parris Island and other Marine bases while refining cultivation to keep Camp Lejeune the nation’s most beautiful military post.
Police report Rexford Joyner, 25, of Roxboro and Roanoke Rapids, charged with six Cumberland County forgeries. He faces $7800 bond in Halifax jail while Cumberland, Richmond, and Northampton case ties him to forged checks totaling around $350. Local shops Benson’s Grocery and Sydney Gay’s Grocery cashed forged instruments. Additional $2500 bond sought. August Halifax Superior Court term set.
Raleigh report says agricultural chemists study mixing insecticides with fertilizer to combat soil pests like cut worms mole crickets and worms. Florida station trials with chlordane hexachloride and Parathion in 46-58 fertilizer show promise but require more work to confirm effectiveness and storage stability. If successful these mixtures could cut labor and improve soil distribution while protecting yields against European corn borer losses.
An inmate at Halifax Prison Camp escaped on Tuesday afternoon and was recaptured midafternoon yesterday near Jimmy Davis stable on the outskirts of Roanoke Rapids. Avery Gibson serving 5 to 10 years for highway robbery from Guilford County escaped from a gravel pit near Summit around 12:30 Tuesday. bloodhounds and a large search followed. He was returned to the Halifax camp by state patrol officers Corp. L. B. Lane and P.C. Luter after the search.
A 50 caliber shell was removed from the stomach of a dolphin caught off Morehead City in the Gulf Stream. Harvey Hines Jr. landed the fish while trolling aboard the Sea Raven in Ottis Purifoy fleet. The shell likely came from a plane practicing over the Gulf Stream.
Halifax voters face a low turnout as the runoff between Johnson and Scott is set for Saturday. In Roanoke Mills, guardsmen will close two days next week for camp, with the mill halting all shifts on Wednesday June 30 for inventory and Monday July 5 for Independence Day observance.

The deadline for Army Enlisted Reserve Corps members to apply for extended active duty has been pushed from June 2011 to July 20. This delay follows a 90 day postponement before the new Selective Service Act takes effect. At Roanoke Army and Air Force Recruiting Station the extension was announced by M/Sgt. Elwood H. Jaycee. Openings remain at Main stations in Columbia and Greenville South Carolina and Charlotte, Durham, and Fayetteville North Carolina.
Police extend the probe into a Roanoke Pharmacy robbery Saturday night, valued at 1500 to 2000 dollars. Entry was gained via a side door on West Second Street, with radios, pen and pencil sets, and other items stolen. Chief T J Davis says the crime may be the work of an organized out of town gang and the search spans Eastern North Carolina.
C. F. Gore of Weldon and J S Pope of Halifax were elected unit chairman and vice chairman of Unit One of the State Highway Employees Association at a meeting last Saturday in Ahoskie. Over 75 members from 14 counties attended and elected representatives to accompany officers to the state meeting in Asheville on October 1.
Local National Guardsmen will travel to Fort Bragg North Carolina for a two week camp from July 11 to 25 Captain Raleigh F Seay National Guard officer announced today Training at the camp will cover firing all basic infantry weapons and familiarization with them He added that Guardsmen enlisting before camp will be entitled to attend and will receive full honor pay.
Halifax Judge Charles R. Daniels presided over 21 cases at the Tuesdays session. Assault, larceny and drunken driving charges appear with several defendants receiving road terms or suspended sentences. Notable verdicts include Willie Taylor for assault on his wife and Elmer Cheek acquitted on larceny while Johnnie Williams was sentenced to five months on the roads.
The Motor Vehicle Inspection Lane No 34 will visit Roanoke Rapids and travel through Bertie and Northampton counties from July 1 to October 12. Halifax County voters head to the polls Saturday for a runoff governor primary between W Kerr Scott and Charles M Johnson. The 82nd Airborne Division plans a June July program for 700 United States Military Academy cadets from West Point. Two groups of 350 will train four days with the 62d Airborne Division beginning June 21, with a June 22 Combat Team Exercise and a formal dance at the Officers’ Club. This marks another stop in their nationwide installation tour. The Lake Summit Playhouse in Tuxedo, NC opens June 12 for 10 weeks of Broadway revivals and new works. Communion Sunday will not be observed as planned due to the minister’s vacation.
