Caledonia escapes blamed for river deaths near Roanoke River
Two men are dead and a third may have drowned after escape attempts from Caledonia State prison farm 25 miles from the city. Louis Pendleton died of bullet wounds sustained during a Tuesday escape, Clarence Stone and Lonnie Taylor are the other victims, and a Harnett county inmate who jumped into the Roanoke River Tuesday remains missing as unrest at the prison farm escalates.

Jesse Rice Dies in 50 Foot Fall at Halifax Paper Mill
Jesse Rice a 32 year old Roanoke Rapids man died after a 50 foot fall while working on the soda plant roof of the Halifax Paper Corporation Tuesday afternoon. Funeral services were held Thursday June 15 at Roanoke Rapids Cemetery with Rev. Herbert Baucom Jr. presiding. Pallbearers were Ross Edwards Eddie Kidd Bruce Rook Clarence Mosley H M Hudson and L H Jenkins.

The Roanoke Rapids Hospital trustees held their regular June meeting in a Nurses Home classroom. The board includes Kelly Jenkins W F Joyner W L Manning F M Brown J T Chase T Peace and doctors J Martin F G Jarman R P Beckwith Bahnson Weathers Covington. A clinic is planned at Second and Jackson Streets for Drs Jarman and Covington to serve mill employees. The staff will occupy hospital office space and the nurse training program will continue. Prices for meals for special nurses were reviewed and reduced per Dr Martin’s recommendation.

Brother Hux Dies at County Sanatorium Funeral Friday
Johnnie Hux aged 64, brother of Billy and Paul Hux, died Thursday at the County Sanatorium. Funeral services will be Friday at 1 PM at Ebenezer Church with interment in the nearby family cemetery. He is survived by 11 children, 3 sisters, his wife, and another brother.

Mrs. Geo. E. Harris died Thursday afternoon at 3:30 at 307 Henry St Roanoke Rapids. She was well known in the city and had made her home here for some time. Funeral services will be held Friday at 3:30 at the residence of her son Maynard Snipes.
