Highway Safety Program Shows Progress In Preventing Accidents
North Carolina reports a drop in traffic deaths from 1946 to 1947 and a further fall through April 1948. Officials credit the Highway Safety Program with mechanical inspections, driver reexamination, stricter patrols, and penalties. The Mechanical Inspection Law has led to numerous fixes, with most failures due to lights, brakes, steering, and other equipment. Reexamination targets human error to reduce collisions and fatalities on NC roads.
