On the Henderson Vicksboro road a locked wheel caused a new Chevrolet pickup to plunge 35 feet into a creek. Mr. Burchette, Mrs. Burchette, and their young daughter Bryan escaped with minor injuries. They were treated at Mariah Parham Hospital in Henderson. Bryan sustained cuts to her legs.

Grand Jury Finds Halifax County Jail Improvements

Local Negro Gets Life In Prison
John Brown city street department employee pleaded guilty to second degree burglary and to assault with intent to commit rape after an attack on Beatrice Johnson, a house servant. Halifax County Superior Court Judge Clawson Williams sentenced five years for the assault and life imprisonment for the burglary.

First Tuesday Herald to begin semi weekly Roanoke Rapids edition
Beginning June 8 the Herald will publish twice a week on Tuesdays and Thursdays for Roanoke Rapids and vicinity. The first edition will appear next Tuesday with new features and plans to increase frequency as conditions permit. The paper has undergone office and equipment upgrades, including a 24 page Hoe Rotary Press installed April 8, with staff additions across departments and new correspondents for nearby towns. News deadlines move to Monday and Wednesday at 5 PM.

Roanoke Rapids Board Upholds Old Poles Ordinance

Threatening letter targets Warren Registrar for murder

Halifax Quota Set At $5140 For Crusade
Halifax County is invited to contribute 5140 toward the national Crusade for Children goal of 60 million. Robert N Simms Jr, chairman, announced. The North Carolina Federation of Women’s Clubs sponsor the drive with local chapters mobilizing Roanoke Rapids and nearby clubs to secure funds. About 3,780,000 Tar Heels are urged to give slightly more than 10 cents a day’s worth of cold drinks. Various workers and professionals have pledged support.

Two North Carolina men face multiple charges including counterfeit money
Cleveland Smith of Garysburg and Lloyd Joyner of Roanoke Rapids were arrested after a dispute led to minor charges in Conway and a string of serious cases. They are on heavy bonds for passing counterfeit money in April and face assault with a deadly weapon, highway robbery, and federal counts in Raleigh, with trial planned for September. The pair were arrested Tuesday by Constable Cole with assistance from Corporal Lane.

A 21 year old white Weldon resident named Barney Dale faces first degree rape charges in Edgecombe County jail Tarboro after an Edgecombe Grand Jury true bill. Weldon police chief P R Kitchin and State Highway Patrol Corporal Logan Lane led the arrest following a capias. The crime reportedly occurred in the Edgecombe County seat late last week.
