Roanoke Rapids Captures Eastern Junior Legion Title

Roanoke Rapids defeated Durham eight to three to win the Eastern section championship in the American Legion junior baseball series on neutral ground. L Dickens at short anchored the infield while Sykes and Hicks starred for Durham as Roanoke Rapids pulled ahead after a two run Durham start and never trailed again. They advance to face Greensboro for state honors next week.

New Sound Equipment At Peoples Theatre In Roanoke Rapids

The Peoples Theatre plans to install a Western Electric senior size sound system described as one of the most perfect installations. The project involved engineers operators and electricians working overtime to complete the installation ahead of the opening. Directors approved the purchase at a recent meeting and acoustical experts were consulted for a thorough survey. The cost will run into thousands of dollars.

Plan Tax Rate Out Of 40 Cents

County Board of Commissioners meets to discuss the coming year’s tax budget aiming at a suggested rate of 85 cents per hundred dollars. Proposed splits: school 27, general fund 15, poor fund 5, debt service 38 cents. State law requires at least 15 cents for schools, with debt service fixed until debt is paid. The average state levy is 41 cents, one cent more than Halifax’s cut.

Robbers of Frank Store Arrested in South Rosemary

Three Negro suspects were arrested and part of the loot recovered in the Max Frank Store robbery in South Rosemary. Rocky Mount officers detained two suspects and a third was captured in Weldon, with Miss Sara Clifton identifying stolen goods. Bond set at 50 to 500 dollars. investigation continues for a fourth suspect.

Mrs Meniza Butts Obituary Near Enfield

Mrs Meniza Butts aged 79 died Sunday and funeral services and burial were held Monday near Enfield. J R Manning and J R Allsbrook of Roanoke Rapids Building and Loan will attend the national convention in Philadelphia on August 11. Jamie Brown Jr was operated on yesterday for appendicitis.

Early Fire Destroys Crewe Building in Town

A fire early Monday morning gutted the two story Crewe Building between First and Second Streets, injuring two people and prompting a perilous jump by A. S. Leggett. The nearby Taylor-Collier Building survived. origin is uncertain with theories pointing to the Twin City Meat Co refrigerating unit or upstairs oil. Fireman Rufus Britton faces serious smoke injuries as water pressure hampered initial efforts. The building owner, W. Crewe, had lapsed insurance and plans to rebuild the ground floor while second floor awaits. The Twin City Meat Co suffered major losses with its cold storage and meat stock destroyed.
