Volume V August Calls for 126 Men in Halifax County Exempt Board
The Halifax County Exempt Board reports calls from War Dept for twenty white and hundred colored registrants to train for camp between August 5 and 9. Many 1918 registrants have volunteered, been rejected, or deferred, leaving a small proportion in class one. County shows 61.39 percent colored registrants, higher than any other county in the state, and class two calls likely to begin in fall. A list of colored men from Weldon and surrounding towns heads to Camp Greene in Charlotte on Wednesday for duty.

The Enfield area mourns 21 month old James Clifton Taylor buried in Roanoke Rapids Cemetery with Rev. A G Carter officiating. In the same week thieves plunder Mr R E L Guier’s store, taking silk goods and fine apparel worth over a thousand dollars, using a rope and ladder to enter, with a White Motor & Machine garage auto later returning the vehicle.

Potato Spraying Profitable in Western North Carolina
Raleigh July 26 Experiments by Mr R W Leiby in the mountains of western North Carolina show that spraying Irish potatoes with poisoned Bordeaux mixture using arsenate of lead is highly profitable and should become routine in potato cultivation. Similar results come from New Bern and eastern truck crop areas, with the Division of Entomology confirming long term profitability of such spraying for maximum yields. Extension Circular 48 on Spraying Irish Potatoes is available on request while supply lasts.
