The Rambler notes flat white squash labeled as Siamese Sauer Squash grown at a Patterson Mill Company garden brought in by Paul T. Thompson. A radio host described encounters with flying saucers, while a coast trip recalls a 1749 New Bern printing press sign and a misdirected police call about a Bayview road.
Roanoke Rapids Merchants Association invites members to its annual outdoor meeting at the Roanoke Rapids Country Club on Wednesday at 1 30. Charles B McFee Jr former Asheville merchant now managing director of the Virginia Retail Merchants Association will speak on Trends. He has a long career in retailing and education.
Ann Winslow 18 of Scotia? Nook Halifax City placed third in the east district I essay contest sponsored by the Carolina Cooperative and the Farm Cooperative Exchange. She trailed Ann Beale 15 of Potecusl Northampton County who finished second and Charles L. Herring 18 of LaGrange who placed first.
WCBT predicted that seven Northampton County men from Rich Square arraigned in the August Superior Court term on kidnapping charges will likely be acquitted by the grand jury. The report cited reliable sources and informants close to Northampton county leadership. Judge J Paul Frizzette of Snow Hill will preside. term opens August 4 with the Rich Square case set for August 6.
The Rosemary Romances defeated Bybee and Bybee 8 to 2 in the opener as DeBerry spun a near perfect ten innings and Hayes held the visitors to seven hits. In the nightcap Everette struck out 10 over five innings to win 6 to 2, boosting the Romances to a doubleheader sweep. Charlie Munday of Rocky Mount was ejected in a washed out game at Simmons Park.
North and South Carolina tobacco growers vote 1174 to 1140 to fund a program by Tobacco Associates Inc. The referendum, two states, aims to expand export markets through education and public relations. Halifax County cast 1805 for and none against. Police report bike theft notes and frequent “borrowing” by youths with no malice.
State Patrol representative John Buck conducts tests in the Roanoke Rapids Municipal Building for last name initials A or B. Applicants issued a license since July 1 can reapply without testing. Renewal fee noted as two dollars.
North Carolina Highway Safety Division reports 402 licenses revoked statewide from June 6 to June 27. North Carolina branch of the National League of District Postmasters will hold a convention in Raleigh on July 25 and 26. Mrs. Mattie F. Greer of Boomer announces registration begins Friday at 9 am at Hotel Sir Walter with a 10 am opening program. Speakers include Roy M. North deputy third assistant postmaster general John Leahey and Eagar B. Jacks, chief clerk and director of personnel.
Walter B. Rick Jr. of Littleton, son of Mr and Mrs Walter B Rick of Litt Wy, is a midshipman aboard the battleship USS Wisconsin for an extended summer training voyage. The cruise, the first to Europe by midshipmen since 1987, began June 23 at Rosyth Scotland and will visit Norway Goteborg Sweden and English ports London Portsmouth Weymouth Plymouth Greenwich and Woolwich.
Mr and Mrs Frank Wilson and families joined Mr and Mrs D Wilson and families in Southerlin Virginia for the 100th anniversary services of Mercy Seat Presbyterian Church. The late Dr Thornton Wilton pastor for 50 years. Stained glass windows in the church were dedicated to the memory of Dr Wilson, father of T Wilson and Frank Wilson of this city.
City issued three building permits totaling 14 500 for new homes. J B Piland received permit for a one story frame residence with four rooms and a bath on Fifth Vance between Fourth and Fifth streets at an estimated 54 000. R H Hunnings built a one story frame residence with four rooms and a bath on Fifth Jefferson between Fifth and Sixth streets at 2 500. Roger C Albright got a permit for a one story brick residence with six rooms and a bath on Roanoke Avenue between Fifth and Sixth streets at 8 000.
Three more arrests were made in the disappearance of four hogs owned by Roger H. Downing. E. B. Bowman George Lewis and Sterling Harris were charged with larceny and receiving stolen property. Harris was released after a non-suit request. Lefty Downing and Bowman and Lewis faced remand to Superior Court August 11 while Harris’s case moved separately. A related case against Sam Clanton, charged with grand larceny for stealing 75 dollars, was also remanded.
Figures from the county clerk in Haltun show marriage licenses trailing the 1941 total by a small fraction. From January 1 to June 10 this year 419 more licenses were issued than in 1941, while about 101 divorces were granted in 1946 with only 10 issued since January 1 this year.
Halifax County court records show numerous guilty pleas and suspended sentences from a July 1947 session in Roanoke Rapids. Cases include assault, drunken driving, non support, carrying a concealed weapon, and reckless driving with fines, costs, and probation terms for multiple defendants.
Miss Evelyn Day Mullen of Roanoke Rapids is named librarian-director of the Charlottesville Public Library in Virginia. The announcement cites her North Carolina roots and extensive library career including UNC and Wells College positions, and military service as an army librarian.
Betty Louise Cobb 10 daughter of Tilman Cobb of Roanoke Junction died Friday after falling from a bicycle into a Gaston driven car at 14th and Hamilton streets. Harding Jones of Gaston was released on $1000 bond on a technical manslaughter charge as police deem no inquest necessary. A Mayor's Court hearing is set for Monday at 1 30. Funeral services were held Saturday at 4 from the aunt's home with interment at Rosnoke Rapids cemetery.
Flora Jean Newcombe seven died near Roanoke Rapids when a neighbor’s trained dog misfired a kick at a dog and struck the child. Survived by parents Mr and Mrs John Newcombe sisters Naomi Virginia and brother Billy and other relatives. Funeral held at Newcombe home conducted by Rev John T Maides Jr. Wrenn Funeral Home handled arrangements with interment at Roanoke Rapids Cemetery.

Ray Finley longtime director of the Roanoke Rapids High School Band and Glee Club has resigned after four years to take a post at Waterman High School near Chicago. He and Mrs Finley will move from Roanoke Rapids next Tuesday to their new home.

New arrivals include a baby boy to Price of Roanoke Rapids on July sth, a girl to Cowan of Roanoke Rapids on July 9, a boy to Hill of South Will, Virginia on July 12, a boy to Thompson of Em poria, Virginia on July 12, a girl to Moseley of Ebony, Virginia, a boy to Ricks of Branch ville, Virginia, and a boy to Overby of Branch Fire on July 14. Firefighters responded to a chipper blaze at the paper mill Monday morning with limited damage.
