Roanoke Rapids Plant Fire Disrupts Power Supply

A major fire at the Roanoke Rapids Power Company transformer room gutted the plant, destroying switchboards and transformers and delaying power for local industries. The largest generating unit survived, with restart aimed for Monday aided by Rosemary Manufacturing and others. Ashby J. Downey Killed in Action

The War Department casualty list for July 10 names Ashby J. Downey of Roanoke Rapids as killed in action. Kennard Breaks Arm In Auto Accident

Mr G S Kennard manager of Weldon and Roanoke Rapids Home Telephone and Telegraph Company broke his right arm in an automobile accident last Tuesday. He was driving, turned out to pass a buggy, ran into a ditch and the car overturned. His arm is healing well and friends expect a speedy recovery.
