Fear For Two City Men Missing In Action Prisoner Report

Roanoke Rapids may have another casualty and at least one more local man held as a prisoner of war. The report notes two city men missing in action with one confirmed prisoner.

County wide labor meeting called in Halifax County

B. B. Everette, Halifax County labor chairman, calls a county wide meeting at 10 o clock Monday morning July 5 in the Halifax courthouse to organize for maximum wartime production. Invitations go to workers and employers with talks on manpower and farm and industry remedies.

Dickens Named to Halifax County Board of Commissioners

D. G. Dickens of Littleton was appointed by A Leonidas Hux to fill the unexpired term of N W Warren as Halifax County Commissioner. Dickens, a WWI veteran and lifelong resident, took the oath and pledged to serve with his county’s best interests in mind. The next board meeting will select a new chairman.

Two Local Soldiers Reported Missing or Prisoner of War

Telegrams to Mrs. Nettie Morris and John Robbing announce Tech Sergeant LeRoy W. Morris missing in action since June 22 and First Sergeant D L Robbins listed as a prisoner of war in Mukden Manchuko. LeRoy, son of Mrs. Morris, formerly worked in a local grocery before his 1942 induction and served as a gunner in the Army Air Corps. Continued on Page 8 sec A.

A and P Names New Manager R L Wynne

R L Wynne named manager of the A and P Super Market at 1033 Roanoke Ave after transferring from Scotland Neck where he led local operations for two years. A Craven County native with nineteen years service, he and Mrs Wynne and their four year old son reside in Chaloner Park.

Funeral for P. E. Ransom Set for Friday

Pat E. Ransom 77 of Northampton County was found dead in bed at Verona between Weldon and Jackson. Funeral services will be held Friday at four from Verona with Rev. Edmund Berkeley, burial in the family grounds. He is survived by his wife, a son Mat W., and eight stepsons led by Frank.

No Holiday For Most Of City Stores

Roanoke Rapids will operate on July 5 with business as usual as the Independence Day holiday closings do not apply when the holiday falls on a Monday. City banks the Post Office ABC Stores and Virginia Electric and Power Co will close all day. A few stores may close, but most keep regular hours.
