Roanoke Mills No. One will operate five days a week starting Monday after news from Manager F. C. Williams. Current employees will shift to the full five day schedule, with other local mills seeing only modest gains. No. One leads a return to full schedules after months of shortened hours.

Hawkins and Miss Mertie Faison of The South Rosemary Home Demonstration Club attended the County Council Meeting at Halifax on Tuesday.
The annual President's Ball will be held Friday night in Roanoke Rapids with music by Jimmie Fuller and his UNC Tarheels. The Roanoke Rapids event is directed by the Lions Club with a long list of chaperones and committees. A second ball is planned for Scotland Neck the same night.
Two Roanoke Rapids youths Carl Haislip and John Finch are jailed in Halifax County after a string of car thefts ending in Nashville. They allegedly stole a Ford V-8, swapped Virginia plates for North Carolina ones, abandoned it in Battleboro, then fled in another truck. State troopers apprehended them near Rocky Mount and Nashville within hours. Authorities plan Halifax County jurisdiction first. Haislip, 18 or 19, has prior city court records. Finch, son of Mr and Mrs G Finch, reportedly with no prior trouble.
Halifax merchants and county officials clashed with Farm Security Administration and Resettlement Administration representatives over a government financed cooperative store plan for settlement farms. Government backers argued the stores would aid settlers with essential goods and dividends, while local business leaders warned of unfair competition and tax money financing the project.
George R. L. Barber, a well known local barber, was treated for a broken nose a broken jaw and facial injuries after a crash on the Roanoke Rapids Emporia highway near the Virginia line. He was taken to Em- poria for first aid then moved to Roanoke Rapids Hospital in serious but non fatal condition. Driver Jack Ferrell of Emporia, uninjured apart from bruises, was identified as the other party.
