Mass meeting endorses loyalty and home guard plan Roanoke Rapids
Citizens of Roanoke Rapids and Rosemary gathered at the mayor's office to back a patriotic resolution pledging loyalty to the government and support for defending town property. A three member committee was named to organize a local home guard under militia plans or police powers, with fire department and alarm systems to follow. The meeting also endorsed interning Heinrich Miller, a German native, for the war duration.

Income Tax Advisers to Visit Roanoke Rapids
The Collector of Internal Revenue announced a roaming team will start January 1 and be on duty in the county by January 2 to assist residents with 1917 income tax returns. An officer will be stationed in Roanoke Rapids February 4–6, at the post office, to help unmarried earners over 1000 dollars and married earners with up to 2000 dollars. All who paid taxes or are unsure should seek the tax man, as returns are mandatory and penalties apply.
