Roanoke Rapids Faces Bill Ending City Ward System

51 Undernourished Children Fed In City Schools

Hot lunches are provided daily to fifty one or more undernourished white and forty colored city school children with federal aid and local contributions. Miss Blount and Miss Tillman head the effort at the High School Economics Department with student volunteers, and the colored school adds home economics staff. The menu focuses on hot soup crackers bread milk and fruit. Early results show improvement and the program may continue beyond March.

Resolutions Passed Against Sales Tax by Roanoke Rapids Merchants

At a special meeting the Roanoke Rapids Merchants Association opposed Senate Bill 242 to amend the city charter and rejected a general sales tax. Local members argued voters would reject the tax when given a choice, noting the town’s near the Virginia border and recent Raleigh faction resentments.
