Citizens travel to Raleigh to press for a referendum on Senate Bill No. 242 amid opposition from local leaders and business groups. The bill would alter boundaries and governance, with protests planned at the Revenue Building and ongoing debates in the Senate committee and House.
A Senate bill introduced by Senator T. W. Long would expand city limits to include mills and industries, oust the current mayor and board, scrap the two ward system, and enact the 1931 act without a public vote. Critics warn it would trigger layoffs, tax hikes, and reduced school and hospital funding, with no referendum and a special election board to manage the shift.
Hot lunches are provided daily to fifty one or more undernourished white and forty colored city school children with federal aid and local contributions. Miss Blount and Miss Tillman head the effort at the High School Economics Department with student volunteers, and the colored school adds home economics staff. The menu focuses on hot soup crackers bread milk and fruit. Early results show improvement and the program may continue beyond March.
At a special meeting the Roanoke Rapids Merchants Association opposed Senate Bill 242 to amend the city charter and rejected a general sales tax. Local members argued voters would reject the tax when given a choice, noting the town’s near the Virginia border and recent Raleigh faction resentments.
Presiding Elder Rev L B Jones will preach at First Methodist Church next Sunday morning and lead the first quarterly conference after the sermon. The pastor will preach at the night service with Senior Epworth League members in charge of music. Public invited.
