Tonight at the Kiwanis Club Merle Price Elizabeth Thortis A C Oliver and William Harris received heartfelt thanks for the Kiwanis Dental Clinic. A full report of the program will run in next week’s issue.
Henry Widwell and W T Miles were found guilty in Weldon Recorder Court of operating a vehicle while intoxicated on a horse. Each pled guilty, fined 50 dollars plus costs, and had motor vehicle licenses revoked for 12 months. Neither owned a car nor held a license. Officers also seized a mule used to transport illegal liquor in a related case.
A remarkable group portrait was taken yesterday afternoon showing all 1200 children examined at the Roanoke Rapids Kiwanis Club 20 weeks Dental Clinic. The image will be printed as a plate in next week's Herald with additional copies to be distributed.
Frank C. Williams of Patterson Mills Co. Roanoke Rapids joined Secretary of Commerce Roper for a two day small business conference in Washington. More than 1,000 business leaders attended as turmoil rose over a claimed push to appoint a favored chairman. Williams issued a statement tonight.
Under Lions Club leadership the Roanoke Rapids annual Presidents Ball drew a few hundred dancers to music by Jimmie Fuller and his Tar Heels. Net proceeds benefit crippled children work and the Warm Springs Foundation for Infantile Paralysis. committee members include Allie Wood James Parker Bill Alligood and Stewart Wilson.
A week long drive begins February 7 to raise 1000 for building a Girl Scout cabin and two Boy Scout cabins and support for the East Carolina Scout Council. The campaign involves 125 volunteers including 25 women, 50 Lions and 50 Kiwanians, funded by small 25 cent contributions from individuals.
The Halifax County grand jury asked Judge W H S Burgwyn to publish monthly lists of recipients of old age assistance, dependent children funds and blind relief. They also noted a push to publish other public money reports. Nine new grand jurors were named for twelve months with C T Johnson of Roanoke Rapids as foreman. Burgwyn praised the foreman and jury work.
Several hundred women filled the Imperial Theatre to view The Bride Wakes Up, a cooking school film sponsored by the Roanoke Rapids newspaper and local merchants. The final showing is Friday at 10 a.m. with doors opening at 9:30. Prizes will be awarded to the ladies after the screening. Prize winners include Miss Annie Lou Hinson, Mrs Iona Hudson, Mrs Leo Chumley, Mrs J C Williams Jr, and Mrs W S Saunders.
The Roanoke Rapids City Board discussed a street paving plan with Hamilton and Jackson Streets, Roanoke Avenue and cross streets. They authorized petition circulation, bond attorney hires, and an election for bond issuance with total city cost about 66 996 dollars and owner costs about 50 135 dollars. Community updates note Moseley boxing advance and local moves.
A special Lions Club meeting called by the Boys and Girls Work committee for Monday night at 7 30 will last about a half hour. The gathering in the basement of the 1st Baptist Church will discuss involvement in next week’s Scout drive.
