Merchants Association secretary Mrs Blair Gibson announced stores will stay open weeknights all next week starting Monday to serve late Christmas shoppers. Some merchants may close Tuesday after Christmas Day. a recent meeting showed division on Tuesday openings.
Promoted ensign Allen Edwin Akers son of Mr and Mrs A E Akers has been raised to lieutenant junior grade in recognition of his service He is stationed somewhere in New India His wife formerly Miss Pridgen and their son Shard reside at Jackson Street indicating a military family update from the city press
A telegram received by Mr and Mrs Brutus W Rook of Gaston reports Brutus Rook wounded in action. The message came from the War Depart and continues on page 12 section A.
Mr and Mrs J W Britton of Jackson Street report their son S Sgt Britton has been hospitalized. The message conveys family concern and provides no details on location or condition.
War Department reports Sgt. Davie L. Harper 34 of Roanoke Rapids killed in Leyte battle on November 12. Sergt. William H. Washington seriously wounded in action in European theater. Harper, born in Franklin County, lived Wendell then Roanoke Rapids. he served since 1932 and was with local mills before enlisting. He is survived by parents, a sister and two brothers.
The Sixth War Loan Bond show at Peoples Theatre last Wednesday raised $64,000 in bond sales. H E Lee reported the city and Halifax county quota is being pursued with E bonds lagging and the drive continuing through the month to reach the $1,281,000 county goal.
Mrs. Geneva Smith received word from the War Department that her husband S/Sgt Wyless L. Smith was slightly wounded in action on November 20 in Germany.
