Harlow Held as Rapist After Preliminary Hearing
Melvin Harlow a city restaurant employee was bound over to Superior Court on a rape charge after a preliminary hearing before Magistrate W. C. Thompson. He will be held without bond at Halifax County Jail until January court. Esther Waters wife of J. H. Waters Patterson Mills Co. employee testified as the principal witness for the state in the alleged crime. The charges stem from Harlow forcing her to accompany him to the Rosemary Graded.

Santa Claus to Arrive by Airplane in Roanoke Rapids Christmas Event
Santa Claus will visit Roanoke Rapids tomorrow afternoon after 3 PM arriving by airplane at the airport on the Littleton highway. He will be escorted to eight local stores including Leggett's, Rosemary Drug, Roanoke Banks & Trust Rosemary branch, Roanoke Hardware, J C Wells 10th Street Grocery, Newsom Oil, Wellworth’s, and H G Hodges for appearances at city shops. The event is a Radio WEED Rocky Mount feature to kick off the Christmas shopping season with a bang. Store hours extend to 8 PM tonight and tomorrow, with regular Friday and Saturday closes.

Verdict in Coroner's Jury on Williams Boys Death
Coroner I T M Cooper and a jury in Halifax County find Raymond aged 8 and Walter aged 13 were accidentally killed by a car driven by W H Daughtry. The accident is deemed unavoidable with no probable cause. Funeral services were held at First Baptist Church Roanoke Rapids, with interment in Roanoke Rapids Cemetery. Parents Henry and Frances Williams survive with a sister and a brother.

Dr Long Undergoes Appendicitis Operation
Dr Long a state senator from Halifax County is recovering in Roanoke Rapids Hospital after an appendicitis operation performed at 8 30 Monday night by Doctors Jarman and Weathers. He is uncomfortable but not seriously ill and there are no complications. He cannot attend the current special legislative session but will join the regular session in January.
