Recreation Commissioners Plan Study Tours for Full Time Program

Roanoke Rapids recreation officials aim to develop a fulltime program. At Friday's meeting five commissioners discussed visiting North Carolina cities with established fulltime recreation programs to learn about equipment, field sizes, initial and ongoing costs, and pool construction and operation. They will reach out to Reidsville Asheboro Lincolnton Newton Canton Morehead City Lenoir Shelby Statesville for appointments and data.

Air Parcel Post Service Begins On Wednesday

Postmaster L G Shell of Roanoke Rapids announces the nationwide air parcel post launches Wednesday September 1. The service speeds deliveries to 42,100 post offices with two-thirds faster transit and doorstep delivery identical to other mail. Promo stickers and in-flight logistics promise fast, modern service across the United States.

Akers Heads Roanoke Rapids Chest Campaign Group

Henry Akers will head the Roanoke Rapids Community Chest drive with Rev. Edmund Beveley R. G. Floyd and Mrs. Robert Vaughan on the committee. The drive chairman and campaign opening date will be announced later. Red Feather services include Boy Scouts Girl Scouts Public Library and School Lunch Fund.

Pastor Hodges Transferred to Fayetteville Church

The Rev Mr Hodges, longtime pastor of the Pentecostal Holiness Church here for four years, is transferred to Fayetteville Pentecostal Holiness Church. He will be succeeded by Rev W E Thompson, previously at Fayetteville. Thompson will preach here this Sunday while Hodges preaches in Fayetteville next week.

Stores Here Open All Day On Wednesday

Roanoke Rapids stores will begin tomorrow afternoon and stay open all day on Wednesdays in Roanoke Rapids and surrounding area. Mrs Elva Martin secretary of the Roanoke Rapids Merchants Association reminded the public that stores will close on Labor Day Monday September 8.

Roanoke Rapids Exchange Club Harvest Festival Opens

The Exchange Club opened its annual harvest festival on the Weldon Highway with "Shows on the Weldon Highway" last night. George Davis announced a busy, clean event with plenty of rides. The Roanoke Rapids Women's Club joined in by making sandwiches and sewing on site while volunteers aided the event. Local families and guests attended as various age groups enjoyed the fairground attractions.
