Halifax Superior Court recessed after civil suit by Mrs Lillian Kennedy against the Atlantic Coast Line Railroad was settled with $3,500 awarded for injuries from a porter dropping a heavy suitcase on her head. The petition reportedly drew threats of prosecution from some union leaders, while lawyer George C. Green advised signers could not be prosecuted for signing. Seven seventh graders from Emerson Junior High School chartered two commercial planes for a sounds trip to San Diego. Mrs. Arline Steiner led the class in washing dishes mowing lawns caring for babies and holding a rummage sale to raise funds. Hampton Rice of Henderson and his three year old nephew William Tip Pett were killed when a southbound Seaboard freight train struck their car about 5 30 last Thursday night. Rice was brother of Mrs. E B Glover of Horner town and well known in Roanoke Rapids. the automobile was dragged over a block and Rice died instantly while the child died on the way to the hospital.
