Storm Sewer Progress Across City Streets
Storm sewers tied to the street improvement plan have been completed on Tenth and Monroe streets and across the Greenberg property in the 700 block. Lines run from Henry to Franklin on Tenth, Ninth to Tenth on Monroe, and across the Greenberg lot. City engineer H B Christie says Jefferson Street from Seventh to Ninth will begin next week and the Fifth Street segment will finish the storm sewer project afterward.

Six Charleston travelers die in Roanoke Rapids wreck
A six person car from Charleston, South Carolina, collided with a tree near Skippers and Emporia, Virginia. Two died instantly, one died in hospital, three remain in critical condition at Roanoke Rapids Hospital. Victims include Jacob Moutrie and Erline Johnson who died outright, and Ethel Watson and Pearl Howell who survived with severe injuries. An unidentified man, and a second unidentified survivor, were also involved. The driver Moutrie is named. others from Charleston. An Emporia undertaker handles the bodies as relatives rush to Roanoke Rapids. Witnesses say the driver may have fallen asleep.

Sawmill Employee Victim Of Heat Stroke In Roanoke Rapids
Ben Wilder, a colored man from Emporia Virginia, died at Roanoke Rapids Hospital on Tuesday from a heat stroke suffered while working at the J. H. Newsom and Son sawmill. He was brought to the hospital at 6:00 PM and died at 8:00 PM on August 22.
