Auto Deaths In State Reach 308 in Six Months
Raleigh reports 308 traffic fatalities and 2,118 non fatal injuries in the first half of 1948. Total accidents rose 37 percent from a year ago while fatalities dropped 18 percent. Pedestrian and bicycle deaths increased slightly, with motor vehicle train deaths down 71 percent as non collision incidents caused 20 deaths and 127 injuries.

Filipino Houseboy Gets Opportunity
Manila report: The Protestant congregation of a U S Army chapel raised 440 to pay Abraham Paler's steamship passage to the United States Methodist ministry. Paler 21 year old former houseboy has served American forces since March 1945 and earned a four year paid scholarship at Eastern New Mexico College funded by the Woman's Missionary Union of New Mexico.

Prison Division Reports Only Two Escapes in Year
J T Thomason supervisor of the First Division of the State Prisons disclosed that during the year ending June 20 1948 only two honor grade prisoners escaped from the first division camps Both escapes occurred at Edgecombe and Warren County camps The eight camps were inspected by the health department and rated highly with one exception at Hertford County Camp being modernized The total prisoner count in the camps was 586 with 202 honor grade inmates and the camps operated at a daily cost of 78 cents per man for food and upkeep.

Five Slightly Hurt In Three Car Collision
Five people riding in one car were injured in a three vehicle crash between Halifax and Enfield Friday night. State Highway Patrol identified the injured as Sergeant and Mrs. Freeman A. Sattelmaier, Sergeant and Mrs. Robert D. Hite of Summer, and Robert D. Hite of Roanoke Rapids. All treated at Rocky Mount hospital. none seriously hurt. Sattelmaier said he did not know the cause. Pickup driver Ernest Baines of Halifax sustained minor damage. other car driven by R. R. Pandit of Bombay, India, a U S college student.

Auto injures woman on highway near Halifax
Irene Battle, 42, of Halifax, suffered a crushed pelvis and a broken leg after stepping from a bus into the path of an automobile driven by a Maryland resident. She was listed in serious condition at Roanoke Rapids Hospital.

Weldon a one year old boy, Pete Nethercutt, son of Mr and Mrs W C Nethercutt, received a bright red Monark Super Deluxe bicycle as a winner in a national Safe-T-Cone company contest for slogans. Later Train Delays Mail Delivery in Roanoke Rapids
Postmaster L G Shell reported morning mail in Roanoke Rapids and some star and rural routes delayed by Norfolk Norlina train number 18 arriving later at 9 59 a m instead of earlier. First class mail reached homes later and some rural routes would not receive it until the next day while star routes were held at Norlina. He asked postal officials to remedy the situation to improve service.

Two Marines Injured In Auto Crash Near Garysburg
Five Marines based at Cherry Point were riding in a car that overturned on U S Route 301 near Garysburg Friday night. Eve Manzardo, the driver, and George Manzardo suffered injuries and were improving at Roanoke Rapids Hospital. Others, Edgar DeLorenzo Lorence Milligan and Frank Hoza Jr, sustained shock and a scalp wound. all were being treated after the crash.

Parks Seriously Hurt In Motor Bike Accident
Charles A Parks of Roanoke Rapids was seriously injured when his motor bike ran into a wooden fence on Virginia Avenue around 10:30 PM Saturday. He suffered a broken upper jaw and head injuries, with officials listing his condition as fair. Patrolman T L Glosson led the investigation, noting loss of control and ambulance transport from Williams Funeral Home.

Fire destroys tobacco barn on Mrs Kincaid's farm
A tobacco barn on the farm of Mrs. H. J. Kincaid about six miles from Halifax caught fire between 5 and 6 Sunday afternoon and was totally destroyed. The barn contained several hundred pounds of tobacco and Mrs. Kincaid estimates the loss at 1500 dollars with no insurance.

Twenty ballots in the Patterson Mills NLRB election were challenged and four void ballots noted after 408 ballots cast. The company argued 18 challenged ballots involved third shift workers laid off, while the CIO said three or four voters were misclassified. Margolis will determine outcome implications for the vote.

Beer Taxes Pass Three Million Mark Through July
State Department of Revenue reported July beer tax receipts of $564 347.49, lifting the year to date total to more than $3,000,000. For the first seven months the state collected $3,121,649.80 in beer taxes, already surpassing the full year totals of 1943 and 194, with 1945 figures omitted.
