Counties Get Big Profit From ABC Stores
North Carolina faces a heated fight over liquor sales with focus on the economic impact. An analysis of 27 ABC counties shows total 1939 liquor sales around 6.93 million dollars and profits near 1.25 million, plus state receipts about 500 thousand. Property valuations and tax effects indicate ABC stores yield the equivalent of a 21 to 30 cent tax rate in several counties, highlighting substantial economic gains for eastern North Carolina. The piece notes the looming legislative battle to outlaw alcoholic beverages, with proponents highlighting economics as a key argument.
