Halifax County Alcoholic Beverage Control stores opened July 19 to August 1 totaling 5400 in first week. The board approved a Halifax store with W C Lawrence manager and Robert Milliken clerk who will oversee the county warehouse.

Fire Truck Fund Hits Thousand

A committee under Fire Commissioner George N. Taylor urged Roanoke Rapids residents with fire insurance to contribute to a one year fire fund to secure lower future premiums. By yesterday donors pledged one thousand dollars toward a modern fire department and equipment before the new building is completed.

North Carolina Co op essay winners vie for state title

Four district winners from the eight annual North Carolina Cotton Growers Cooperative Association essay contest will compete in Raleigh on August 19 for the state championship and a one year college tuition scholarship. Thousands of rural high school students entered through school and county eliminations. The essay topic is What a Unified Program of Cooperative Marketing and Cooperative Purchasing Can Mean to the Farmers of North Carolina.

Roanoke Rapids Merchants Association held a regular session with reports on a large bonded cotton warehouse under construction to store cotton this fall. A peanut buyer is expected to be stationed here this season and dairymen will join as a unit, with a Fair Trade campaign to be explored further.

Fire damages Rosemary Drug Co front after early morning blaze

Early morning fire heavily damages the Rosemary Drug Co front with three to four thousand dollars in damage to storefront fixtures and stock. Firefighters contained the blaze before it spread to the rest of the store and second floor. the cause was traced to either an electric refrigerator or an electric sign in the window.

Second Crippled Clinic Planned in Roanoke Rapids

The Kiwanis Club sponsors the Crippled Clinic at Rosemary Baptist Church basement on Wednesday afternoon August 21 from 1 to 4. Free examination and treatment are offered to those unable to pay, under Dr. Walter F. Cole of Greensboro.
