The Roanoke Rapids Herald dedicates this issue to two school teachers, praising Miss Clara Hearne as a beloved teacher and principal and acknowledging another veteran educator past her four score years who influenced the writer.
National Baby Week is set for April 29 to May 4. Local births include F D Jr born April 20 to Mr and Mrs Frank D Wilson and Barbara Ann born April 22 to Mr and Mrs H B Ted Speight. A local fishing scene features Frank Hawley’s catch at Mattamuskeet with open water sport in Roanoke River and Jones Pond areas amid Easter flowers thefts at the cemetery.
The Roanoke Rapids Graded School Board names the new school building the Clara Hearne Graded School in recognition of Miss Clara Hearne’s long and faithful service to the community. Board members listed include T. W. Mullen chairman and J. T. Chase F. D. Wilson E. W. Eubank L. S. Cannon W. L. Manning Wm. Medlin and Dr. Bahnson Weathers.
The House approved the Day Liquor Control Bill 52 51 and then 57 40 to require a two thirds majority for recon sideration. The measure shifts to state wide control with county support needed, facing a Friday Senate vote. Halifax officials Thorne and Leggett split on readings and clincher.
The Clara Hearne Graded School Building on Cedar Street opens with eight classrooms for First through Fourth grades and an auditorium for 400. The Roanoke Rapids School Board named it after longtime principal Miss Clara Hearne in recognition of 25 years of service.
