Rural schools in Hal County unite for the Patterson Debating Cup competition. Participating schools include Hobgood Dawson Halifax Darlington South Rosemary Calvary Aurelian Springs Hollister Bear Swamp and Hardrawee. Debates April 5 will argue United States membership in the League of Nations with Halifax hosting later rounds.

Fifth Street to be Opened Up to Bolling
The County Highway Commission approved a contract to build a road from Fifth Street to Bolling. The route will ease local traffic, allow access to Bolling without crossing the railroad, and pass within 50 feet of Roanoke Rapids cemetery with a spur to the cemetery.

Community Service Report Highlights 24 Meetings and 2707 Attendants
Mary Washburn directed a busy month with 24 community meetings drawing 2,707 attendees across schools including Darlington Jear Swamp Calvary Aurelian Springs Hobgood Dawsons Halifax Roanoke Rapids Glenview Hollister. The largest crowds gathered at Aurelian Springs and Glenview. Hollister Calvary paid for work without state aid for seven months. Juniors at Hobgood reported the top intellectual score. Mary Louise Bell led Hobgood. Clyde Rook of South Rosemary won the jumping test at eight feet nine inches. A Hobgood Junior Citizenship Club camp-fire supper featured a Home Talent Circus with acts spoofing Barnum Bailey, Sleeping Beauty, Siamese Twins, a four-hundred-pound baby, and more, followed by pictures and a Beaver composition by Dan Benn.

Roanoke Rapids town ordinance prohibits fowl running at large. Offenders face a five dollar fine upon conviction. Police conduct house to house canvassing to enforce compliance. Chickens are allowed in proper places but become a nuisance if they destroy gardens.
Powelltown Items Triangular League Debate Planned
On Friday night March 8 at 8 Halifax Darlington and South Rosemary will debate the League of Nations with Halifax visiting South Rosemary and South Rosemary sending a team to Darlington. Evelyn Brown and Robert Merritt will uphold South Rosemary at home while Helen Powell and Viola Glover represent the school at Darlington. Lewis Taylor recovering from a serious operation. Dr A L Zollicoffer of Weldon to lecture at Smiths Church Sunday at eleven with Sunday school at ten. Mr R E Merritt and Mr L A Daniels traveled to Petersburg last week. Pulpit and church chairs selected, adding to the building’s appearance.
