Obituary for Frances Goekoop a devoted wife and mother

Frances Goekoop widow of William L Geekoop and daughter of J C Kennedy died at 42 after a four year tuberculosis battle She born in Granby Quebec moved to the district in 1905 married about 1906 and died peacefully at home Funeral services were led by Rev W B Sallans in Brandon with burial there Surviving are her husband a son Bernard a daughter Marie her parents a brother Josie and two sisters Mrs Schaefer and Mrs Anderson The community extends sympathy

New Train Service on National Lines Brings Improved Travel

National railways announce a new timetable taking effect October 3 with enhanced service on Coordinated lines of the Canadian National and Grand Trunk Pacific. Double daily trains between Winnipeg and Eastern points begin October 16 with through sleepers Montreal to Vancouver. Folders outlining the changes available from railway agents.

Blues vs Reds contest announced by local council

The Royal Temp lars of Temperance council hosts a Blues versus Reds contest. A public baptism occurred Sunday near the pump house with one adult immersed. O T P agents say Rivers will receive publicity soon and that further subdivisions will be surveyed and offered for sale.

Local residents attend Teachers Convention and visits

Bradwardine Miss M Leeson and Principal C V Gunn attended the Teachers Convention last week. Mrs Armstrong of Beulah visits daughter Mrs W J Shepherd. Mr and Mrs E Stewart and Mr and Mrs W Graham spent a few days in Brandon. Miss M Hearst of Brandon visited Mrs E G Chapman over the holiday. Miss Margaret Kay of Roden visits sister Mrs R H White at Rivers. Miss Mildred White spent the holiday at home.

Union Church Anniversary Services

Anniversary services of Union Church will be held on Sunday October 31 with Rev J Reid Field Secretary of Union Churches as preacher. The choir will provide special music. A fowl supper follows on Monday 5 to 7 30 pm in the church parlors ahead of an 8 15 pm high class concert in the church auditorium. Watch for bills and next week’s Gazette.

Salvation Army Concert in Brandon for Home Service drive

Salvation Army band members from Brandon and provincial officers attended a Knox Church concert on Friday. Rev W B Sallans chaired and Adjutant Oake spoke with 100 views shown. Adjutants Tutte and local committee members T W Buggey and T W Offen also spoke. Brandon Band performed solo and vocal numbers and Mayor Dinsdale read. The event was praised as the best yet. On Saturday officers canvassed for funds with good success.

G W V A Dance Draws Veterans to Wagar Hall

The Rivers Branch of the Great Wet Veterans Association held a successful dance at Wagar Hall on Wednesday evening. Veterans Orchestra from Brandon provided music and attendees praised it as the best yet. Organizers J Bartlett Hugh Rea Geo Barefoot and Dave Rutherford hope for monthly events.

Rally at Union Sunday School Draws Splendid Attendance

The first Rally of the Union Sunday School was held on Sunday afternoon with a large crowd. The church was beautifully decorated by a special committee. Notable features included addresses by Mr. Buggey Mrs. Offen and Miss Rose plus Miss Jessie Smyth singing Ninety and Nine and an active orchestra performing vocal and instrumental selections.

Grain Growers Meeting in Rivers for Delegates and Local Board

United Grain Growers shareholders will meet in Rivers Town Hall on Saturday the 23rd at 3 p.m. to elect a delegate for the Calgary annual meeting and to elect a local Rivers district board. L. L. Goekoop, Bec'y.
