A son was born to Mr and Mrs Pete Luchuk on April 8 at Rivers. The event is announced in local birth notices with names and date.
The speaker longs for spring as endless winter drains energy and joy. He laments snow and storms, frost and influenza, and the cold winds from the Mackenzie to Alberta. He seeks cheerful days and outdoor life but finds warmth scarce and life paused by freezing weather.
Britain controls about eighty percent of the world’s raw rubber while the United States uses about seventy percent. After wartime prices fell to eleven cents, rubber producers faced finance pressure as markets were inactive. Now Britain corners rubber with bank help, establishing a minimum price around thirty cents a pound, with exports taxed to protect profits. If sustained, US motorists would take on Britain’s debt to Uncle Sam via rubber sales and duties over eight years. Some advise US to plant rubber in Pacific Islands or South Africa. Britain seems to hold four aces, Toronto Saturday Night.
The Red Cross Society, with D Bates and Dr Shaw volunteering, operated a free clinic for children with enlarged tonsils whose families could not pay. A school room served as a ward, staffed by trained nurses, aiding 32 children so far. The Banner Russell notes plans to extend examinations to surrounding districts and operate on any additional cases.
The Rivers Curling Club held its annual meeting in the Town hall on Thursday evening with the secretary presenting the financial report and arranging payment of ice fees to Thompson and Helloffs. Officers for next season were elected including Patron Sir J A M Atkins president L Marsh and others.
At a Town Hall meeting on April 7, W Swain was elected President and W Thomas as Vice President. C Gabe became Sec Treas with A Dewar as Manager and S Stimpson as Captain assisted by J Bartlett as Vice Captain. The club aims for a stronger season with new players and community support as the Rivers Athletic Association Cup returns to test the team, and a Footballers' Benefit night is planned at the Bijou Theatre.
Organizing Secretary Miss Bryer of the Woman's Auxiliary for Rupert's Land and Saskatchewan visited Rivers last week. She addressed a Thursday meeting at the Rectory and a Sunday talk at St James' Church, recounting thirty years as a pioneer in China and stressing the need for Christian foundation for China’s future. She also spoke at Kenton Wheatland and Bradwardine. The Gazette offers a premium one year subscription for $2.
