Retiring a Pool Becomes Lawn as Walkers End Backyard Swim Era
Irwin and Mary Walker of 400 Fifth Avenue end 35 years of backyard swimming after deciding to fill the pool and let the area become part of the lawn. The family hosted Red Cross lessons for 15 years, with 35 to 45 students in small groups, while Irwin maintained the pool and Mary supervised from the deck. The backhoe start in 1980, metal walls, muck sand bottom, and a salt drift noted. The Walkers will keep the six foot fence and the duck souvenir, and Irwin’s CN signal department shed was moved to the yard after his 1998 retirement.
