How Insects Prepare for Winter
Insects use varied winter survival strategies from egg to adult stages. Some migrate or hibernate in soil or water, others enter diapause or freeze tolerant states, and many survive as eggs ready to hatch in spring. The mountain pine beetle has expanded north with warmer winters, while some species remain restricted by cold. Hanbidge of Saskatoon School of Horticulture notes outreach and education programs.
