Wetland walk reveals old gravel pits and new seedling growth
Conservation staff toured wetlands northeast of Rivers near a former 1973 gravel pit dug for railbed ballast. A later, larger southern pit dates to 1928. Boardwalks, bulrushes, chokecherries, and 93 000 trees planted in 2015 mark ongoing restoration. Fermented crabapples were noted near the exit.
