Branigar Brothers to Pay for Sidewalks and Inspectors

Riverdale Board met in regu lar session to decide Branigar Brothers petition for new sidewalks on Ivanhoe near 141st street and Wabash avenue. They offered eight dollars daily for two inspectors and two percent of the contract to village for engineer fees, but the ordinance requiring fee payment by the builder stood. After a recess a compromise on engineers’ fees was reached and the permit granted. Drainage and sewer issues were addressed including railroad easement delays and culvert work at Indiana avenue. Additional repairs and re‑cording steps for an alley were ordered amid street improvements and cinders discussions.

A powerful cyclone struck St. Louis Missouri on Thursday afternoon. It left at least seventy dead and more than six hundred injured with extensive property damage across the city.

Dolton Boys Heroes After Lake Drowning Rescue

George Schafer recalls a Pine Lake drowning incident where a boat of ten capsized. Ten people were involved. a 10 year old girl drowned. Walter and Edward Albrecht leaped in fully dressed and helped save several others. The two boys are praised as heroes by Schafer.

Frank Robbins In Accident On Sibley Street

Frank H. Robbins Jr of Dalton was seriously injured Sunday evening when his motorcycle hit a Cadillac on Sibley street near Lincoln Avenue. He required 15 stitches for abdominal wounds, a broken nose, and a cut lip. he was moved to Calumet City hospital and was improving by Tuesday.

Mrs OConnor Resigns From Dalton Riverdale Exchange

Mr and Mrs Charles OConnor and family plan to move to Chicago on Saturday October 1 and reside at 7917 Throop Street. Mrs OConnor has been manager of the Dalton Riverdale Telephone Exchange for five years and resigns for health reasons after 23 years in the work. A Plano woman will be temporary manager. Mr OConnor is central office foreman and the family leaves amid best wishes.

Ernest Neath Dies Suddenly in West Pullman Home

Ernest Neath of West Pullman father of eight died suddenly at 11615 Lafayette Avenue. He worked at the Pullman Works and had grown up in Dalton before settling here. One son drowned in the Calumet River on September 8. Funeral arrangements were not announced at press time.

Notice For Bids on Student Transportation Services

The Board of Education of School District No. 148 Thornton Township Dalton Illinois invites bids to transport pupils from 146th street and the Illinois Central Railroad to and from the Chicago street building. Robbers Seized After $10,000 Fur Theft At Roseland

Thieves stole nearly ten thousand dollars worth of fur coats and 1046 in cash from Peoples Store in Roseland on Sunday morning September 18 and were captured by police after information from John P. Gately and his brother William, who found them at work.

Two Con Men Target Dalton Man in Distribution Scam

A couple of confidence men fleeced Frank Zula of 2600 dollars in Dalton after posing as a Croatian connected to a charitable distribution. They lured him with a fake offer to handle fifty thousand dollars for poor countrymen, then vanished with cash and a suspicious portfolio. Police alerted after Zula reported the loss.

Narrow Escape in Garden Firefight Injures Mrs Cardin

Mrs. Victor Cardin was wounded last Monday when neighborhood youths shooting a .22 rifle fired toward a tin can. The bullet struck her right knee area and tore flesh on the left leg before hitting a fence board. Neighbors sought justice, but Cardin refused to prosecute if the boys are local youths and friends. The incident serves as a warning to handle firearms with care as Mrs Cardin recovers.

J. W. Hood of The Pointe manufacturing dept was treated for appendicitis last Monday. The appendix ruptured and his condition was serious but improving. He has led the plant's manufacturing efforts for over ten years and helped build its patronage.

Ernest Turner nine years old of Blue Island had his left leg cut off above the knee last week by a Baltimore and Ohio Chicago Terminal train at the 123rd street crossing in Blue Island. Earlier reports note several youths of similar age were seen flipping freights on this railroad in Riverdale after school, a warning to avoid such dangerous activity.
