Girl Scout Finance Drive Opens Across Dalton Area

The Dalton Riverdale Girl Scout Council launches a two week finance drive with house to house canvassing. Eighteen zones have captains and teams to solicit funds for new troops equipment leader training and operating costs. The effort aims to expand opportunities for girls in Riverdale Dalton and Ivanhoe.

Canning Sugar Applications Deadline Noted

The canning sugar application deadline is September 30 but due to office closures on the month’s end housewives are urged to mail by September 25. Only those who have not reached the seven and a half pounds per family member and still need sugar for 1945 may apply for supplementary ration.

Dolton and Riverdale Firemen Battle $20,000 C&E I Rail Yard Blaze

Dolton firemen aided by Riverdale firefighters fought a Sunday night blaze at the Chicago and Eastern Illinois rail yard 146th and Indiana Avenue. The fire, of unknown origin, caused about $20,000 in damage as crews worked from 9:30 pm to near 2 am amid crowds of motorists.

Rites Held Sunday for Geo Koehler Former Riverdale Clerk

George L. Koehler 71 a former Riverdale resident and long time Marcellus Michigan civic official died September 6 at his daughter’s home. He led the Marcellus Michigan Gas and Electric office from 1935 until last fall. Survived by two sons George Jr and Edward daughter Mrs Nimtz and granddaughter Mrs Evelyn Anderson. Funeral was at Romig funeral home Marcellus September 9.

Prisoner of War Message for Lt Vernon Schaefer

A War Department telegram to Mr and Mrs George Schaefer of Riverdale confirms their son 1st Lt Vernon D Schaefer was a prisoner of war of Japan. He disappeared after a bombing mission over Japan on November 21 1944 and is expected to be returned to military control. The note cites Red Cross information and promises further updates. Also mentioned is USS Houston survivor Raymond G Krass who sent a brief cable to his parents saying he will be home soon.
