Mill Strike Looms as Lumber Association Withdraws Offer
The Chicago Lumbermen's Association pulled its 1.10 per hour raise offer to the Mill Carpenters' union starting June 1, unless carpenters return to work. Union leaders say the contract can be reopened anytime, while employers claim it lasts until June 1. The dispute threatens a building slowdown affecting many firms and thousands of workers as 50 of Chicago & Riverdale Lumber Co. mill workers are already idle. About 1,800 union members favored an immediate raise, 500 backed sticking to the contract, with radical elements defeating the latter.
