Ford Plans Barges For Waterway Transport From Hegewisch
Ford Motor Company designs double deck barges to move automobiles from the Hegewisch plant via a lakes to golf waterway once the Chicago to New Orleans channel opens. Initial barges would be 300 feet long and 40 feet wide, carrying 150 cars. The Calumet River plant at 126th Street and Torrence Avenue now handles 97,000 cars yearly and serves Illinois, northern Kentucky, and eastern Iowa. Opening river transport could turn the plant into a Mississippi Valley distributing center with government dredging contracts in progress.

Calumet Township Taxpayers' committee expects about a 35 percent reduction in 1928 taxes for roughly 8,000 property owners after the county court sets a hearing date within a week on objections filed by W. F. Struckman. The group believes court action may force the board of review to reexamine tax books and waive the unpaid balance.
