Dolton Soldier John Burch Returns Home From WWII Prison

Sgt. John W. Burch son of Mr and Mrs John Burch of Dolton Illinois was liberated by the Scotch Guard of the British 2nd Army on April 28 after being held near Walendorf since December 17 1944. He arrived home June 6 and shared experiences of prisoner camps long marches box cars air raids and a hunger ration. He will marry Miss Elizabeth Burke June 30 at St Leo's in Chicago.

Helen Lucas Joins 24 Day Southwest Tour Party

Helen Lucas of Riverdale travels with her aunt and uncle Claude Manson and his son Claude Jr of Chicago on a 24 day tour through the Southwest starting Tuesday June 6. The itinerary includes Denver Salt Lake City San Francisco Los Angeles El Paso and New Orleans.

Arthur Mullen Awarded Air Medal for Ploesti Raid

Belated official recognition for T/Sgt. Arthur C. Mullen, B-24 ball turret gunner and armorer, awarded the Air Medal with citation for meritorious achievement during the Ploesti raid on August 10, 1944. He and his crew bailed out, were held as POWs in Bulgaria, and released on September 8.

Applications for Increased B Rations Being Made

Local War Price and Rationing boards are accepting applications for higher B gasoline rations effective June 11. Only B card holders with essential occupational driving exceeding 475 miles monthly qualify for increases, with a new cap of 650 miles. Home-to-work drivers should not apply as their requests will be rejected.

Methodist Conference to Open 106th Session in Chicago

The Rock River Methodist Conference's 106th annual session begins June 20 at the Chicago Temple. Bishop J Ralph Magee leads 402 churches totaling 119 267 Methodists in Northern Illinois with speakers including Bishop Edwin Holt Hughes Dr John M Schneider and Dr Ernest Fremont Tittle. Activities feature a Friday youth event and a prison camp return talk by Rev Donald Holter followed by ordination and appointment readings on Sunday.

Riverdale War Loan Reaches 36 Percent of Goal

Riverdale reports show individual purchases of War Bonds totaling 48350 or about 86 percent of the village quota. With only one third of workers reporting chairman Milo F Day hopes the 112000 quota will be reached when all reports come in before the June 30 drive ends.

Pilot Returns From 23 Months Overseas

1st Lt. Kenneth Rex Vanderaa called his parents in Dalton to report his return to the United States after 28 months overseas. He flew 64 missions over Germany France Belgium and Holland and 10 missions as a B 26 bomber pilot in the Aleutians before joining Gen Patton's Troop Carrier Command. He earned the Silver Star the Distinguished Flying Cross with Oak Leaf Cluster the Air Medal with Oak Leaf Clusters and the Presidential Unit Citation. He landed in Puerto Rico May 28 and is now based in Miami Beach as chief crew dispatcher. He praised Florida but said Dalton Ilinois is best.

Captain Propper Returns from England After 28 Missions

Captain Henry Propper, pilot of a B-24 Liberator with the 392nd Heavy Bombardment Group, returns home to Dalton on a 30 day leave after completing 28 missions over Germany. He has earned the Air Medal and the Distinguished Flying Cross and will report to Fort Sheridan after leave.

Edel Thies Wins Four Year Scholarship to University of Chicago

Edel Thies daughter of Mr and Mrs Adolf Thies of 138918 Edbrooke Ave Riverdale has received a four year scholarship to the University of Chicago. She is finishing her sophomore year at Thornton Township high school and will enter next fall based on her high school record recommendation and scholarship test performance.

Dolton Fire Dept Jubilee Plans for 1945 Anniversary

The Dolton Fire Department prepares a 50th anniversary celebration from June 27 to July 4 at the Dolton Park carnival grounds. Two hundred embroidered emblems, parading fire apparatus from 15 neighboring departments, water fights, and modern equipment will highlight the events. Trophies for top participants are on display at the Dalton Bank with judging criteria explained.

Riverdale Troop 9 names new leaders for summer

Richard Kelly and Leon Willey were chosen to alternate as Scoutmaster of Riverdale Boy Scout Troop 9 for the summer at a Scout committee meeting. Alfred Harris resigned as Scoutmaster. Robert H Tuveson elected chairman, Julius Gronquist named secretary. The reorganized committee planned overnight camping and merit badge work. Board of Review set for June 27 or 28 with Dalton Troop 16 invited.

Memorial plan for Emerson Rodman at Delton Methodist

At the memorial service for James Emerson Rodman at Delton Methodist Church neighbors and friends donated funds to purchase a Sunday school memorial altar with a cross and candle holders for the Junior department. The church was decorated with flowers from local friends, and Emerson earlier attended the Dalton Methodist Sunday school.

Dolton Board Resumes Sheridan Street Paving Plan

At a Dolton Board of Trustees meeting the public letting was ordered under Illinois Motor Fuel Tax to pave Sheridan avenue from Chicago street to Oak street. The project faces past delays due to labor and material approvals from the War Production Board.

Mothers of World War II Plan State Meeting in Chicago

A mass gathering of Mothers of World War II in Illinois is set for Monday June 25 at 8 p.m. in the LaSalle hotel Illinois room Chicago. National president Mrs Gretta Rousch will lead the session with principal speaker Mrs Pfeiffer who has just returned from Washington D C. Wheels and Tires Stolen From Worker’s Car

Richard Laishton of 610 Garfield Ave Calumet City told Riverdale police Sunday morning three wheels and tires were stolen from his car parked near the I H B roundhouse. The theft was discovered about six o’clock.
