Congressman Derwinski spoke at a Riverdale dinner about the summit implications and Soviet aims. Dalton police plan three new cars and a base radio station to boost patrols, with two officers training in photography and fingerprinting for accident scenes and mug shots.
James DeWitt, son of Gary DeWitt, introduced to the Ivanhoe Reformed Church congregation on May 29. He will minister during Rev Garrett Willerdink’s summer vacation and assist in daily vacation Bible School work from June 20 to July 1, teaching the Adult Bible Class and leading prayer and study hours. His pulpit debut is set for June 5 at 11:30 a.m.
John E. Swanson of 14201 Sperrbors took the oath as trustee of the Village of Riverdale at the May 24 regular board meeting. He will fill the unexpired term of Harold Schaefer who resigned at the previous meeting. Schaefer had served on drainage police fire water health lights and sidewalks committees.
Dolton police investigated burglaries at two gas stations that occurred early Monday morning. At Jack Lee's Standard Station on Sibley and Senecola 33 books of S H green stamps were stolen along with $200 in a car tune up kit and change from a cigarette machine. Entry was gained by breaking windows and bars, with evidence suggesting the burglars cut themselves on glass. The second break in at Del's Gulf Station on Sibley and Michigan involved a similar method and a broken cigarette machine.
The Swim Club announces office hours to answer member questions about project progress. The construction superintendent will not explain methods. Hours are daily 1 to 3 and 6 to 3 pm, Saturday Tina, Sunday 2:30 pm.
The Thornton Township High School music department presented a string instrument demonstration for elementary students in the school auditorium. A two summer programs run June 20 for six weeks, including a string program for prospective freshmen and a six week summer band program with private and group lessons.
The Dolton Riverdale Woman's Club held its final 1959 60 meeting May 5 at Dolton Park fieldhouse with Mrs Petraske presiding. New officers for 1960 61 were installed led by Mrs John Wer nicke as president and include vice president first secretary treasurer and historian. A beauty demonstration by Empress DiLene cosmetics followed, with May baskets decorating the hall.
South Holland Mayor Henry Vander Giessen, hospitalized after a gasoline explosion and flash fire, remains critically ill at Passavant Hospital Chicago. His mother reports no improvement as doctors continue strong antibiotics following extensive skin grafts and a strep infection.
St Paul Lutheran School intermediate grades will present One Hundred Years In America on Friday June 3 at 7:30 in the school auditorium. The pageant covers 1858 1958 with scenes from church school history and contemporaneous U.S. events, featuring songs and performances by grades four to six directed by Donley Matthias and Alvin Hitzemann.
Fred A. Siekmann is appointed superintendent of District No. 148 Dalton Wimats for the 1960-61 school year. He has served as acting superintendent since December 1959 after the death of William L. Reaueh. Siekmann previously worked as principal and brings decades of teaching and administrative experience including time as a high school principal in West Branch Iowa and as a junior high teacher in Savanna Illinois.
Terry Nelson son of Mr and Mrs Thomas F Nelson 216 East 141st Dolton has been selected to represent Dolton and Riverdale at the 1960 Premier Boys State in Springfield Illinois June 18 to 25 He was chosen by a committee of Paul Gall Post 303 American Legion headed by Leon Huntz Thornridge High School Dolton is a junior at Thornridge High School in Dolton The winner was chosen from local boys of leadership and character in the Dolton Riverdale area now in sophomore or junior year at Thornton Township and Thornridge High Schools He will be one of 1200 boys from across Illinois to participate Boys State is a program originated by the American Legion Department of Illinois for training in citizenship It is nonpartisan and not military It aims to show democracy needs intelligent citizens and fair administration They perform real government functions including selecting officials and debating bills in a simulated legislature

The Troop 222 and Post 222 committee hosted a dinner at Dalton Park field house on Tuesday May 17 at 6 30 PM to recognize the Scout Mothers Auxiliary. Main course featured baked Cornish hen stuffed with Spanish rice and baked potatoes with cheese. Head chef Dr. Shannon led five cooks Fraeno Faoro Don Bruggeman Walter Lundstrom John Ehlers and Larry Ehlers assisting.
