Civic Leaders Launch Boy Scout Fund Drive in Dalton Riverdale

The Dalton Riverdale Boy Scout campaign began January 17 with about sixty volunteers lining up to solicit funds. A kickoff meeting at Lincoln School drew nearly forty attendees with additional helpers. Campaign goals include 4845 dollars to cover salaries, transportation, dues, and training across three districts, with Chicago Heights Harvey pledging 3350 dollars and the rest to be raised in nearby communities.

Local Man Fends Off Negro Assailant on City Street

Fred Stutzriem of Riverdale on the way to work was grabbed from behind by a young black man on 138th Street between Edbrooke and Michigan. The attacker released after a torn collar button, was knocked to the ground by a left hook and fled. police later searched the area with no arrest.

Local Couple to Celebrate Golden Wedding Anniversary

Mr. and Mrs. James Stanczik of 13343 Indiana Avenue mark fifty years of marriage since 1882. They were wed in Muscoda Wisconsin and moved to Riderdale two weeks later. Daughters Mrs. D. W. Thurston of Pasadena California and Mrs. Walter Wesse of Hegewisch and son Roland will join in the celebration.

Dolton Kicks off tournaments and youth club drive

Registrations close Monday January 23 for Dolton business men's ping pong and ice skating with no entry fee and prizes for first and second. Local business sponsors will supply prizes. The Dolton Boys and Girls club invites residents five and up to join, with scouts already backing the drive. A Riverdale park ping pong team visits Dolton for a return match tonight at the park warming house.

Methodist Plays Offered by Dolton and Vincent Churches

The Hi League of the Dolton Methodist church presents a one act play Rumors Wanted on Friday January 20 at 8 PM with no admission charge. The Hi League at Vincent Methodist church will stage eight contest plays January 21 starting 4 PM and 7 PM with 25 cent admission. A second group will perform The Miller's Daughter or Bound in Honor at Lincoln School auditorium February 9 at 8 PM with tickets 35 and 15 cents.

Fire damages new Riverdale home under construction

An early morning blaze on January 18 caused about 1000 dollars interior damage to a five room brick and frame house at 13914 South State street in Riverdale. The fire started in the kitchen and may have resulted from spontaneous combustion tied to rags used for floor work. Strong Riverdale fire department response saved the structure. Freddie W. Ludwig had planned to occupy by February 1.

138th and Halsted Worst Crossing for Local Accidents

The Halsted and 138th Street intersection was Riverdale’s top spot for auto crashes in 1988 with five incidents. Police Chief Frank Mraz also cited I. H. B. and B. & O. C. T. overheads on Halsted and Indiana Avenue as other high-risk locations, while Riverdale saw fewer motor deaths in 1938 compared with 1937.

Recreation News Dalton Village Hall Dance Schedule

Dalton Village Hall announces a dance class Friday evening January 20 preceded by a short moving picture show by Mr. Heinrich at 6 15 p m. Regular Friday dances 6 to 8 30 p m except the second Friday monthly 6 30 to 7 30 p m. Registrations remain open for the ping pong tournament at the village hall.
