Dolton and Riverdale move to unite Civilian Defense efforts as officials appoint coordinators and volunteer workers. The plan follows national guidelines with tire restrictions and emergency divisions mapping fire police medical and welfare roles in the defense strategy.
Registration for the second semester of the Thornton Township High School evening school in Harvey will be held Monday evening, Jan. 26, from seven to nine. Courses include machine shop, mechanical drawing, cooking, sewing, home nursing, business English and speech, Spanish, mathematics, bookkeeping, typing, shorthand, and office machines. The term runs fifteen weeks with a small tuition charge.
The American Red Cross requests sewing and knitting help to meet wartime demands. Volunteers may contact Dolton chairwoman Mrs. H. W. Slaughter at 13919 Lincoln Ave or assistant chairwoman Mrs. Charles W. Berger at 715 144th St. Their Dolton phone numbers are Dolton 909 and Dolton 841 respectively.
Illinois Supreme Court upholds Cook County ruling that Thornton township Supervisor Propper need not submit relief bills to the town board of auditors for semi monthly audits. Propper says the decision vindicates his stance amid a long dispute with Winterhoff and others over relief practices and costs to taxpayers.
The Paul Gall Unit 308 American Legion Auxiliary will hold its regular meeting Thursday January 22 at 8 pm with Gladys Johnson presiding. No further monthly serving committees until notified. Refreshments served at last meeting each month.
Mr. and Mrs. James Hartman of Dalton announced their son, Corp. Paul Hartman, stationed at Fort Shafter in Honolulu Hawaii, sent a censored message received Wednesday January 7 stating he is well and wishing friends a happy New Year.
Mrs Conrad Kern, aged 82, of 82 East 136th Street Riverdale, underwent a major operation on Saturday January 10 at Ingalls Memorial hospital in Harvey and is showing steady progress toward ward recovery.
The W. G. Spencer Woman's Relief Corps 279 installed 1942 officers led by president Adele Stutzriem and senior vice president Jennie OConner. Installing officers included Meta Schroder and Ida Matz. Guests from nearby corps attended and a light lunch followed. The next meeting is Friday January 23 with hostesses named Rampke, Peacock, Horn, and Struven.
Residents who moved or will turn 21 by the next election must re register at the Village Clerk's office to be eligible for the Spring primary or Fall election. Registration closes January 20 and reopens May 1.
Mr and Mrs Robert Mulcahy of Chicago visited Sunday evening at the home of Mr and Mrs D Herrlod in Riverdale for a social gathering.
The South Shore Zone Walther League will hold its annual Winter Rally at Immanuel Evangelical Lutheran Church on Sunday January 18 1942. Registration starts 2 30 PM with zone president Carl Neuman presiding at 3 PM. The theme Christian Fellowship includes addresses by Rev Walter C Greve and other leaders.
Proclamation urges all residents to avoid burning old newspapers boxes magazines and waste paper to prevent paperboard shortages for defense shipments. Organizations are asked to cooperate in conserving and collecting waste paper led by IRA J. Hastings village president and Civilian Defense chairman.
The Village of Dolton raises vehicle license fees to $5.00 on and after February 1. Licenses are obtainable at the Village Clerk's office. Also mentioned are social notices of New Year Eve gatherings and a birth at St. Francis Hospital in Blue Island.
A string of crashes injures seven people across Dolton Riverdale and nearby towns. Mrs. Marion Ferris of Chicago suffered severe scalp lacerations and possible skull fracture after a hit and run on Lincoln avenue. Others include Walter Ungelug of Dolton who rolled his car avoiding a dog, and several Halsted street collisions in Riverdale and surrounding areas with multiple injuries and hospitalizations.
Aviation Cadet William Propper, son of Henry Propper, has been appointed Cadet Major and Adjutant of 1st Group at the Air Corps Replacement Training Center Kelly Field Texas. In three weeks he completed basic training and now begins five weeks of further instruction and drill to prepare for future duties as pilot and officer.
Joseph Pracht Jr., son of Mr and Mrs Joseph Pracht of Riverdale, left January 6 to return to Camp Forrest Tennessee after a ten day fur lough at his parents home.
