Dolton Board Sets Hearing on Cottage Grove Opening

Dolton Board of Local Improvements schedules March 11 for a public hearing on opening Cottage Grove avenue. Attorney Maloney notes a State Highway Department letter saying the state will proceed with a 20 foot pavement at no cost to the village once the street is opened. Board unanimous to advance the project as a key village matter.

Local Fire Chief Clarified and Village Measures Discussed

Discussion over Berger fire department status clarified that Albert Heinke is chief of Dalton and in charge of Berger with approval from the village board. Dalton may buy 500 feet of hose funded by their funds with village tax money reimbursement planned. Treasurer reports $2598.10 on hand and crossing watchmen requested for Park Avenue and Lincoln Avenue crossings. Four new street lights ordered for the Chicago subdivision near 146th Street. Coal Shed ordinance referred to Judiciary committee after proposed changes.

Riverdale Board Agrees to Take Over 144th Street Lighting

Riverdale village board last Tuesday approved a contract with Public Service Company to assume maintenance of 48 lights on 144th street in Ivanhoe at 23.32 per light annually, bringing the total street lighting to 150 lights. Branigar Bros. had funded lighting on 144th street for years and will cover transfer costs, effective Feb 15. The clerk was told to thank Branigar Bros. for their cooperation.

Firemen praised for prompt response to near fire

Mrs. J O Nairn thanks the firemen for their cheerful emergency response that averted a serious blaze. Mr. and Mrs. A Goldberg of Ivanhoe announce the birth of a baby girl at Mt. Sinai Hospital on February 1, the first Ivanhoe birth this year 1930.

Bids Opened For Village House Drain Contract

The Board of Local Improvements met and opened bids for 314 house drains. The lowest bid fell to 48 cents per foot, down from 60, saving about 12 cents per foot for homeowners while sewer is built. Three contractors bid, board refused higher price.

The Air Ship Flight Fails To Lift Off

A large bi plane owned by Geo Daily of 6428 Langley Avenue Chicago failed to fly from Thornton to Chicago last Sunday. The craft weighs 500 pounds with a 40 foot wingspan and a 12 horsepower two cylinder engine. Daily plans to fly once weather clears and he masters the mechanism. He has made several short hops, while bystanders opted to let another attempt the flight.

Chimney Fire Causes City Alarm in Dalton House

A chimney fire at the J. Q. Nairn residence in Dalton triggered smoke and soot and sent firemen racing to the scene. Mrs. Nairn acted quickly, shut off the oil and aided Grandma Daley, who will be 104 on her next birthday. Several local notices follow, including reunions and birthdays.

Legion and Auxiliary Donate for Nurses Quarters at Speedway Hospital

Paul Gall Post and Auxiliary of the American Legion donated 250 dollars to furnish a complete room at Speedway hospital’s nurses quarters. The gift comes from October 1929 Community Fair proceeds totaling over 550 dollars, with 800 dollars remaining to be divided between the Post and Auxiliary. The Auxiliary will add its share to the fund and continue service work, while Harold Miller and Mrs Wiebke arranged for a door plate to be made in Speedway’s occupational department.

A new assistant postmaster for Dolton arrived at Roseland Community hospital on Thursday February 6 1930. The young man will later assist his parents Mr and Mrs L E Brookfelt in handling the Dolton mail which is growing in volume and his help will be valuable in time.
