Propper enters Republican bid for State Legislature

Attorney William F. Propper of Dalton filed petitions with over fifteen hundred signers on February 7 at Springfield to run as State Representative from the Seventh Senatorial District in Cook County. He is the only south of LaGrange candidate seeking the office, arguing southern representation in the General Assembly. Propper, a 1926 1930 GA member, will not seek re election as Thornton township Republican committeeman, clearing the field for James Gouwens to become township GOP committeeman.

Homewood Choir to Perform at Sandridge Church Sunday

The Homewood Concert Choir directed by Walter Aschenbrenner will give a program at Sandridge Methodist Church on Sunday February 15 at four o clock. The 48 member group includes Harold Waterman of Dalton and is sponsored by the church board of Education.

Plan Defense Homes Project for Dolton

Dolton village board heard plans from Teninga and Company to build thirteen defense homes on Indiana Avenue between 142nd and 144th streets with around one hundred lots in the subdivision. The homes will be four to six rooms and erected under the federal housing program with work to start soon. The project would be the village’s largest home-building effort and bring community benefits. The board also adopted a resolution opposing Illinois Central Railroad’s proposed ten percent commuter fare increase and sent copies to the railroad and the Illinois Commerce Commission for action effective March 4.

Red Cross Denies Rumors of Fund Misuse

The Red Cross refutes rumors about wartime fund handling and states no veteran claimed the organization overcharged. It urges donations to the War Fund and names Mrs. Pauline Slaughter as a local drop point at 12919 Lincoln Avenue in Dalton.

Gas Stations to Close at Night to Conserve Electricity

Dolton and Riverdale car owners must buy gas locally and stations will stay closed from 7 p.m. to 7 a.m. starting Sunday February 15. The mutual agreement, approved by the Gasoline Retailers Association, aims to conserve electricity for war production plants and is mirrored in nearby suburbs.

Mrs. Nancy West Rites Held in Dolton Funeral

Funeral services for Mrs. Nancy West 13820 Kanawha Avenue Dolton were conducted Tuesday from the residence with Rev Milton Freeman of First Methodist Church Delton officiating. Interment followed at Cedar Park cemetery. Born May 29 1870 in Ontario Canada she had lived in Dolton 38 years and died February 7 at St Francis hospital Blue Island. Riverdale volunteer fire department hosts the annual masquerade ball at the Bowen school gym on February 14. Rainstorm Friday Triggers Flooded Basements Citywide

Heavy rains last week caused widespread flooding with many basements inundated and some heating systems knocked out. Ivanhoe residents facing three to four foot water at homes near the Illinois Central viaduct. 144th Street under the IC viaduct blocked. trainside access at Ivanhoe station hampered. Nearby towns Harvey South Holland and Homewood reported similar damage from one of February’s worst storms.

Men to Register on February 16 for Nine Questions

Colonel Paul G Armstrong, State Director of Selective Service, announced that men registering February 16 for possible military service will answer nine questions. The items cover name, residence, mailing address, telephone, age and birth date, birthplace, contact person, employer, and place of employment.

Draft Registration Dates Set for February 16

February 16 is set for all unregistered men born by December 31 1941 and under 45 by February 16 1942 to register at local boards. Registration runs 7 a.m. to 9 p.m. at designated stations with provisions for military personnel and remote or ill registrants. Deliberate failure to register carries up to five years in prison or a $10 000 fine or both.

A joint meeting of Dolton and Riverdale business men on February 9 organized the Riverdale and Dolton Business Mens association. A second meeting is slated for February 16 at 8 pm in Doldale hall Dolton inviting all local businessmen.
