Riverdale Protests 10 Percent Suburban Fare Hike

Riverdale and neighboring communities joined in opposition to a proposed 10 percent rise in Illinois Central suburban commuter fares. The village board adopted a resolution challenging the increase and sent copies to the Illinois Commerce Commission and to regional towns. Commuters argue the hike is unwarranted during the emergency, noting higher traffic from tire and rationing, while railroads seek ICC approval for suburban and intrastate rate changes already announced to take effect February 10 and March.

American Legion Auxiliary Unit 308 Set Meetings In February

The Paul Gall Unit 308 American Legion Auxiliary schedules its regular meeting for February 12 with Gladys Johnson presiding. Eighth District meet is February 5 at Harvey Legion club rooms with Ruth Kennedy presiding. Cook County Council convenes February 6 at 1 30 PM in Sherman Hotel Chicago. Members prepared favors for Orland Canvalsement home for Valentines Day and Washington's Birthday and for Sherman Cottage at Normal with refreshments served.

Daylight Savings Time Begins February 9

The shift from Central Standard to Daylight Saving Time takes effect Monday February 9 and will not disrupt schedules nationwide. The main change is waking up one hour earlier and ending the day one hour earlier, with trains radios and other schedules remaining the same.

Need for Civilian Enrollment Stressed in Dalton

James J. Mossell, chief of voluntary participation, urges all citizens over 16 to enroll in Dalton's civilian defense, with questionnaires available at the village clerk's office Luken's Drug Store or from patrol officers. He says enrollment enables citizens to defend home and community against imminent all-out war as the council prepares to meet emergencies.

Riverdale Firemen's Masquerade Feb 14

The Riverdale volunteer fire department hosts its annual masquerade dance on St Valentine’s Day February 14 at the Bowen School gymnasium. The event features varied costumes and prizes donated by local merchants. Proceeds fund firefighting equipment maintenance and replacement or addition of gear.

New Shell Service Station Planned at 138th Street Corner

Construction to start soon on a new super service station at the corner of 138th street and Leyden avenue. The original building was razed last week by owner Christ Schmutzler to clear space. The station will offer Shell Oil products and is managed by W. Cochran of Hammond, Indiana.

Mercuries Nip Harvey 24-20 In Lucky Seven League

The Bowen school gym hosted two games with the Mercuries beating Harvey 24 to 20 as Allan Golding and Roland Nelson led with 18 points each. Ivanhoe defeated the Knights 72-49 with Johnson scoring 24 for Ivanhoe. Open Bible edged Dalton 31-28 and Hazelcrest beat the Knights 25-20. Next week’s Thursday Bowen schedule features Ivanhoe against Open Bible then Mercuries versus Knights.

City Approves Asphalt Repairs Under Subway at 130th Street

The City Council approved an order by Alderman Arthur G. Lindell to repair asphalt beneath the subway at 130th street and Indiana avenue and to fix eleven other ward streets. A second, larger street list will be presented at the next meeting.

Riverdale Council Opens Office Today

Riverdale announces the opening of a civilian defense office led by Chief of Police Frank Mraz. The town expands auxiliary fire and police units with twenty new auxiliary firemen to begin training and a drive to enroll local citizens in the civil defense corps.
