Riverdale Village Board approves repairs and notices

The Riverdale village board met Tuesday and ordered catch basin work, a new fire bell installation, and a fire department wiring update. They will seek estimates for village hall water closet and steam plant, repair the hall roof, replace a bad pump shaft, and enforce street cleanliness rules with strict oversight. The Illinois Central crossing on 138th Street was warned to stop frequent blocking or train crews will be arrested.

Photoplay at Lund's Hall Features New Photography and Irish Romance

Patrons are invited to Lund's Hall for a sequence of films including Friday's Micro-Cinematography feature described as a new photography experience. Saturday presents Lad From Old Ireland a romance shot on actual Irish locations. Western Railroads Settle Wage Rise for Conductors

Conductors and trainmen on fifty western railroads won a 10 percent wage increase, effective immediately, following a late afternoon conference. Earlier engineers received a 4 percent raise last Saturday, bringing the week’s total rail wage hikes to around 9 million dollars annually. The settlements signal the near completion of a yearlong nationwide wage movement affecting most railroad staff.

Fire destroys barn on Henry Homeier farm near Calumet Grove

A barn on Chas Vietz’s Henry Homeier farm near Calumet Grove burned last Tuesday evening. One horse died in the stall, another was saved. Fire departments from Kensington aided by neighbors saved the house and farm outbuildings, but the barn and its contents valued around $2,000 were lost with small insurance.

The Western Indiana Railroad distributed a new time card on December 26. The changes are small and affect only a few trains but require a small adjustment for reliance on an old card. Riverdale Man Michael Buechler Dies After Short Illness

Michael Buechler of Riverdale died at his home 2612 136th Place on Monday night December 26 1910 after a brief illness. Born in Luxembourg January 4 1881 he immigrated to the United States at about nineteen and worked as a carpenter. He married Rose Berschinski May 30 1881 at Washington Heights and later moved to Dalton then Riverdale. Eight children Matthew Adam Catherine Joseph Elizabeth Herman Clara and Agnes survive with Adam abroad in the Coast Artillery. He was a charter member of St Luke's Court CG O F Riverdale and a member of Carpenters and Joiners Union No 434 Kensington. Funeral services were held at St Mary's Church and interment followed beside his wife in St Benedict's cemetery west of Blue Island.
