Beginning January 4 Thornridge High School hosts radio communications and radiological instruction at 7 30 p.m. sessions last about two weeks. Gene Opperman and Med La Beau will teach with prior military and commercial radio experience.
The St Francis Hospital Auxiliary of Blue Island will convene Monday January 9 at 2 p.m. in the hospital staff room with president Mrs Russell Streff presiding. Members are urged to attend and newcomers may leave names in the hospital gift shop.
At the December 27 Riverdale Village Board meeting, construction below the first floor nears completion while steel for the structure is set for late week. Flexicore for the first floor should arrive around January 1, and basement work will follow underground trades. The board also granted permission for the March of Dimes Mother’s March on January 31 from 7 to 8 PM.
Dolton's Chief Grover L Cogswell marked 23 years with the police force on October 1. A dinner at the Dorchester Club honored him with a battery operated wristwatch inscribed for meritorious service from the Village Board. The presentation was made by Village President Fred L Kasten. Cogswell joined the department in 1935 after a prior three year stint with the C E I rail road as a policeman.
Congressman Derwinski announces the 4th District Congressional Office in Blue Island will stay open year round to handle public inquiries including social security immigration and academy appointments. Office hours are 9 to 5 Monday through Friday with upcoming district visits planned. Bishop Burmill appoints Rev. William Faughnan as Priest in Charge of Church of the Holy Name Dolton serving Dolton and South Holland area. First mass set for Jan 8 at 9:30 am in temporary Dorchester Club quarters. future church to be built on east side of the expressway at 154th Street.
The Denon First Baptist Church congregation renames to Central Baptist Church and holds Christmas Day worship at 142nd and Michigan in Ivanhoe Dutton Riverdale. A public dedication is set for Sunday January 8 at 2 30 p m with further service details to come.
The Rutgerdale Dolton Guild of the Ingalls Memorial Hospital Auxiliary announces its annual meeting for all members on January 12 at 7 30 p m in the hospital assembly room. Members are urged to attend and meet the new chairman of the auxiliary.
The Pointer newspaper announces a rate increase from 15 to 20 cents per month for carrier deliveries starting in 1961. A friendly note invites readers to share feedback and even offers doorfront service, hoping to grow subscriptions via neighbors.
The Tri-Cities South Suburban Community Concert Association reports a record 1960 61 sales for its SL series and surpasses Columbia Artists Inc. This achievement is led by Charlotte Chambers Earl Flanagan and Virginia Flanagan with Mantovani orchestra headlining at Thornridge High. Communities Harvey South Holland Dalton Riverdale Hazel Crest Homewood Flossmoor drive strong support along with Chicago Indiana residents. Remaining 1961 62 dates include Theo Uppman and Vienna Boys Choir with future plans to expand the program.
Mrs Henry Von Engeln of the Dalton Riverdale Woman’s Club visited Boy’s Town in Grafton TL with her husband and raised funds to provide each resident boy a candy box and Christmas gifts. The Dalton Chamber of Commerce named 58 Christmas Cheer prize winners with awards from 10 to 40 dollars and prizes can be picked up at Dolton Riverdale Savings and Loan.
The Riverdale Dalton Memorial Association of American Legion Paul Gall Post 303 hosts a New Year’s Eve party on Saturday December 31 with dancing and a smorgasbord. George Beemus 45 of 6025 Washington Blvd Chicago injured his right hand while working at Acme Steel. He was taken to Rose Land Community Hospital by a coworker for treatment.
Dolton village board met after a premeeting of local improvements. Bids for a combined sewer and water system on Dante avenue and nearby streets were opened and awarded to George Hardin Co. for 48 753.02 for sewers and 32 597.60 for water mains. The area request for Thornridge High School district inclusion was denied.
