State Clears Indiana Avenue With No Parking Signs
A fire at Chromium Mining and Smelting Corp on 12550 S Indiana Ave Riverdale yesterday around 5:15 p.m. injured none. nine employees were inside the plant and escaped. Foreman Ed Maas was briefly reported missing but later found. volunteer firefighters battled dense smoke as the mixing area burned in the worst fire the plant has seen.

Lake Calumet Sea Captain Honored At Dorchester Club
Captain Berth M. Nilsen of the 4200 ton tanker Norgard received honors at the Dorchester Club in Dalton after guiding the first ship to reach Lake Calumet since the St. Lawrence Seaway opened. Mary Bay and James Pisco joined Nilsen along with other port officials and a student learning the shipping business. The event celebrated the annual race to bring the first ocean going vessel of the navigation season into the Port of Chicago, with Nilsen earning $2000 and prizes. The Nordgard sailed from Rotterdam with palm kernel oil amid ice beyond Newfoundland on its voyage to Montreal.

Dolton Civilian Defense Unit took part in the Opal 61 Alert exercise from 3 PM to 11 PM. Radi communications covered four corners of Dolton and then moved to the Med LaBeau center at 14932 State Street. No Parking Signs Go Up On Indiana Avenue
The east side of Indiana Avenue between Sibley and 138th Street received new no parking signs installed by State workers with state funding. Dolton village attorney Arthur Dillner says the move follows a November 8 ordinance, approved by the Dolton village board, and sent to the Illinois State Highway Department for review. State engineer J P Tuthill approved the ordinance and scheduled sign installation weather permitting. Dalton village officials may rescind the ordinance to remove the signs, per traffic official W C Petterman.
